Rose is a loving mom and wife to her step-kids Lyle and Corey, and her husband of 18 years, Troy. Rose is your typical housewife in the 50's. She cooks, cleans, and takes care of the kids while Troy is at work. She is loved by everyone around her.

Rose is a very strong person because she has gone through her fair-share of hardships. Although, she stays a positive person and overlooks her struggles. I call that a strength because some people keep their sadness close to them and let it control them. Meanwhile, everyone has their flaws, and I would say that Rose's flaw is not knowing what's good for her. I sympathize with Rose because when her husband had a baby with another women, she stayed with him, and any other women would've left without thinking twice.

This picture relates to Rose because of her never-ending love for others around her. Her love and affection has led her to overcome the pain of knowing her husband cheated on her. This also relates to Rose because in the movie, she always talks about how love and loyalty is the most important thing when it comes to family. For instance, Corey, Troy's son, was hiding the fact that he was still doing football despite what Troy said and when Troy found out, he was livid, but Rose said that Troy should still love his son because a family should love one another.

For instance, the poem states
"In the end everything will be all right
Because families forgive each other no matter what". This relates to Rose because when Troy cheated, she stayed and raise his newborn with him because she always believed that her husband was a good man. This poem also relates to Rose because she always says how family is the most important thing.

The song "Stronger" by Kelly Clarkson relates to Rose because this song is about strength and perseverance. For example, the lyric "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, stand a little taller" relates to Rose because of all the things she has endured. For example, raising kids that aren't her own, having a cheating husband, and having to deal with her husband's death.

Pride:
Pride is a big theme in Raisin in the Sun because when the Younger's go to buy a house in Clybourne Park, they change their mind because of their pride. For example, the text states, "And we have decided to move into our house because my father—my father—he earned it for us brick
by brick. We don’t want to make no
trouble for nobody or fight no causes, and we will try to be
good neighbors. And that’s all we got to say about that. We don't want your money". This shows pride because instead of buying a new house, they keep their father's house since he built it from the ground up.

Post 10: Theme of Fences

Masculinity:
A theme in Fences is masculinity. This is a theme in the movie because Troy, the main character, was a strong believer that everyone in the house had certain responsibilities. For example, the men had to bring in the money and support the family while the women had to cook, clean, and take care of the kids. This shows throughout the movie because Troy says, " Not me. I ain’t gonna owe nobody nothing if I can help it. Miss a payment and they come and snatch it right out your house. Then what you got? Now, soon as I get two hundred dollars clear, then I’ll buy a TV. Right now, as soon as I get two hundred and sixty-four dollars, I’m gonna have this roof tarred". This shows the theme of masculinity because Troy is saying how he needs to care about keeping a roof over his family's head instead of buying a TV.

The book, "A Raisin in the Sun" and the movie "Fences" are similar and different in their own ways. For example, the themes of "Fences" and "A Raisin in the Sun" are similar because they both take place during the same time period. The theme of the two stories are similar because they go along with having pride in your family and where you come from. Meanwhile, these themes are also different because one of the main themes in "Fences" is masculinity and that is directed at the fact that Troy was the main character and the movie showed his dominance over everyone around him. Although, in "A Raisin in the Sun", they focus on having pride in yourself and your family and to not take things from others.

Also, the characters in these two stories are similar and different. They are similar because for the most part, the men agree on the fact that they go to work and bring in the money for the house while the women keep the house in order. They are also similar because the men, Troy and Walter are stuck in the past and live in their sorrow. Meanwhile, the characters are also different because in "Fences", Rose would defend her husband and call him a "good man", even after he cheated and Ruth would do the opposite. Ruth would blame everything on her husband, Walter. She would blame him for not going to work, giving their son money for fundraisers, and engaging in fights with his mother and sister. This shows how "Fences" and "A Raisin in the Sun" are similar and different in their own ways.

Rose is a very straight forward person. For example, I know this because the text states, " And next week . . . when that recruiter come from that school . . . I want you to sign that paper and go on and let Cory play football. Then that’ll be the last I have to hear about that." This shows that she's straight forward because when she was arguing with Troy, she was saying how when a recruiter comes to the house, that he's going to sign the paper to let Corey play football.

Rose is also a very caring person. I know this because in the movie, she says "Seem like that would be the best place for him if they did put him into the hospital. I know what you’re gonna say. But that’s what I think would be best." This shows that she is a caring person because after her brother-in-law got arrested again for "disrupting the peace" she said that it would be best for him to go to a hospital. Gabe, the brother-in-law, also seems to have a disability, so Rose was thinking about what the best option for be for Gabe would be, which is a hospital.
