South is portrayed as violent, less educated, etc. because they come from a lower income region and speak with a less sophisticated register. The south, just like the north try to emphasize the differences between themselves through stereotypes (the south residents believe that the rich north residents are dumb and effeminate). The north has a similarly negative opinion of the south.
