What is unique about mystery books is that they are always about different crimes and very interesting crimes.  
How can I collect and interpret clues to solve the mystery?
Because later in the book something else happens and it could be related to the old clue. 
How can I learn life lessons as I get to really know my characters?
You can learnt life lessons when the suspect is caught it teaches you don't do that. Also you can learn about your character when he or she is solving a clue you can learn how they solve a mystery and how they act.
