Early childhood education can provide “the best possible start” of life by giving children the opportunity to learn and speak Inuktitut and grow up prepared to live a harmonious life rooted in Inuit ways of knowing.

In the past 2 decades, evidence has shown that preschool/kindergarten education has lasting positive impacts, enhances wellbeing in many domains.

This new facility will accommodate 56 children with three separate classrooms. One classroom for preschoolers, one classroom for toddlers, and one classroom for infants. This daycare facility will eventually have a lot of cultural programming that is age-appropriate for each classroom. Agnico Eagle and Peters Expediting Ltd has helped with funding this new facility. There is also a new drive for parents to try and help out with fundraising.

Iqaluit’s only Inuktitut daycare in danger of closing

I believe that the Government of Canada and Nunavut should be keeping up with funding for the daycares across the Nunavut communities because it is important that these children learn routines with their daily activities provided by the early childhood educators. The children thrive when the children get the hang of their routines and learn to work among each other. The daycares that provide Inuktitut culture are very important to the children to keep our Inuit culture alive.

On May 21, Lori Idlout the MP of Nunavut has spoke on the pending closure of this Daycare, she has fought to keep their facility open as it promotes Inuit cultural and speaks Inuktitut. Parents shouldn’t have to worry about the closure so I’m glad Lori Idlout took on this right away. ECE Has good impacts, it helps children’s growth, lets them learn and has a good routine for when they start school.

According to the 2016 census, the average age in Nunavut was 27.7 years, the youngest in the country. Nunavut has the highest proportion of children aged 14 and under at 32.5% and the lowest proportion of people aged 65 and over at 3.8% (Government of Nunavut, 2017).

There is a strong need to enhance early childhood education in communities, including access to Inuit-specific opportunities and support for parents and families

Early childhood education can provide "the best possible start to life" by giving children "the opportunity to learn and speak Inuktut" and "grow up prepared to live a harmonious life rooted in Inuit ways of knowing".

All daycare facilities in Nunavut are operating as non-profits and are regulated by the Nunavut Department of Education.
