Self-reflection of time spent tutoring an English Learner.

During my time tutoring a student one-on-one, I was able to tap into her funds of knowledge (Moll, Amanti, Neff & Gonzalez, 1992) and incorporate them into our time together. I learned about how visuals (Echevarría, 2018, p.19) can aid a student's learning and make connections easier. Students can also learn a lot more when the material is scaffolded and taught at a slower pace (Echevarría, 2018, p.131). Students also like to have manipulations to work with, so something like categorizing terms (Echevarría, 2018, p.84) is great for students to visually see and work with.

Ways to incorporate my own Funds of Knowledge into my future occupation.

Funds of knowledge (Moll, Amanti, Neff & Gonzalez, 1992) is important to include in our teachings, but they can also inform our teaching styles as needed. Much of a teacher's focus is incorporating our students' funds of knowledge into the classroom, but this can also be done in from teacher's perspective. I have spent time thinking about how my own funds of knowledge can inform my teaching and they are listed below.

This example problem includes an item that many students should be familiar with. There are spaces for students to include key terminology (Brozo, 2017, p. 148), which is provided below the picture in case they do not know how to spell it. On the right side is a picture of an area that is taken directly from the soda can so that students can transfer their knowledge to a real-life object. Below the area, is space for students to take notes (Brozo, 2017, pp.352-353) and record their work.

This poster is an example of what project-based learning (Person, 2009; What is Linked Learning, 2019) can look like, so students get practice and exposure of what a scientific poster would include. It is important for content subjects to create assessments that include more than one subject, because this allows students to see the connections that each subject has to another subject. Students also get to experience what some occupations may do on the daily to see if that occupation is something they may be interested in.

Various strategies that can be incorporated into the classroom to increase literacy skills.

Each week, strategies that were discussed were recorded in our weekly literacy reflection. I particularly liked the strategies in week 5 and 6; and, I have included some of these strategies in some lesson plans I have designed for this semester. Many of the strategies include students creating or writing something to share with others aside from the teacher. When students get to share their work and see other students' work, they are more motivated and more engaged in the activity they are doing (Echevarría, 2018, p.176).
