Women in subsistence agriculture

Women's role in agriculture has been changing drastically. Through male-out migration, women have been able to gain more power and become an even larger part of farming through the diversification of subsistence farming. Whereas women in many parts of the world such as Africa have held prominent percentages of the farmers, there are still gender disparities within subsistence agriculture. Even with the recent male-out migration and diversification of subsistence agriculture, women are still being offered the lower paid, minimal skilled jobs in many instances.

“What Is the Impact of Rural Transformations on Women Farmers?” World Bank Blogs, blogs.worldbank.org/developmenttalk/what-impact-rural-transformations-women-farmers.

Women in commercial agriculture

Women's role in commercial agriculture should not be understated, as they are very important to this type of agriculture. As farming continues to become more industrialized and commercialized, we are seeing trends in which women are more successful than men in managing risks associated with the businesses. Even with these seemingly advantages, the pay gap is still prevalent in many parts of the world. It seems that even though there are statistics that show that women are more economically advantageous in their practices on average, they still don't make the same profit as men.

“Women.” Farming First, 8 Mar. 2018, farmingfirst.org/women_infographic/.

Difficulties women in agriculture are facing

Even though women make up almost half of farmers in most places, there are still harsh gender barriers that they face constantly. In many places, women struggle with gender bias in which it is hard for them to deal with the economic parts of farming, as it is very hard for them to get credit to run their farms. Additionally, compared to men, women are more affected by poverty, hunger and disease. Another issue that women farmers are dealing with is the pay gap. As men are offered managerial positions over women, women are forced to be paid minimally and offered lower skilled jobs in some instances as well.

Duckett, Maryellen Kennedy. “Empowering Female Farmers to Feed the World.” Culture, National Geographic, 10 Feb. 2021, www.nationalgeographic.com/culture/article/partner-content-empowering-female-farmers.

“Women in Agriculture.” Weltagrarbericht, www.globalagriculture.org/report-topics/women-in-agriculture.html#:~:text=On%20average%2C%20women%20comprise%2043,farms%20by%2020–30%25.

Roles of women in food distribution

Women's role in food security and distribution are very important and are only recently being recognized. Women face difficulties in resource collection and face many gender disparities through their work, but they overcome these challenges and are still the most important part of the process, producing 60-80% of the food in developing countries. In regards to food distribution, women do not have the same access to markets that men have due to the gender disparities that exist. For this reason, even though women make up almost half of the farmers, for every 10$ increase to women's pay would be a 110$ increase to a man's pay.

“Women and Sustainable Food Security.” Women: The Key to Food Security, www.fao.org/3/x0171e/x0171e02.htm.

“Women.” Farming First, 8 Mar. 2018, farmingfirst.org/women_infographic/.

Interesting statistics of women in agriculture

In many developing countries in places such as Africa, women work 12-13 hours more than the men in their field. However, women's efforts are not seen or respected the same as men's at all. Additionally, in all of the countries assessed by the FAO, females were only given 5% of the agricultural extension services. Just 10% of total aid provided for agriculture goes to women as well. Another interesting statistic is that women are responsible for 60-80% of food production in developing countries.

“Women in Agriculture.” Weltagrarbericht, www.globalagriculture.org/report-topics/women-in-agriculture.html#:~:text=On%20average%2C%20women%20comprise%2043,farms%20by%2020–30%25.
