For example in WWI, trenches were commonly used among many countries. However the disadvantage of trenches was that you cant take out the enemy unless the dare to step out of their trench. But poisonous  gas made it possible to kill multiple people in trenches. Even when the enemy were not in trenches, poison gas could take out multiple people at a time. Therefore, poison gas was one of the most important inventions in the war, because it caused most of the casualties. Germany produced the most gas totaling 68,000 tons. The British and the French came close with 25,000 and 37,000 tons. 

Gas was not the only chemical weapon in WWi.
