It is one of the most easily recognized trees in winter. It has needles instead of leaves and the needles don't fall off, or so you think. Actually, a white pine replaces it's needles every five years. And while we are on the topic of leaves, does anybody know why most trees lose their leaves and pines don't? The answer is below. Moving on to how you Identify a White Pine. Look for scaly bark this will often be quite bumpy. The needles come in groups of five and are typically two inches long. The answer to the Question I asked earlier is: Humidity, the trees that have large flat leaves such as maple, beach, birch, and oak all would lose too much water from their leaves in the dry winter air but pines have needles designed for retaining moisture. So they don't have to lose their leaves. Maryland even has the White Pine as it's state tree. Lastly today here is apicture of the white pine. Today I am going to write about something that we twont haveo see for a while. Have you ever been to the beach when a scary wasp landed in your play area? These are mud wasps (picture below.) These wasps love all that lose wet sand you have made. They make their hives out of Guess what: Mud! Yah everybody saw that one coming. Anyway the hives don't look like they were made of mud they look like long thin tubes of brown paper. I recently went to Williamsburg V.A. And they had tons of hives there. Anyway back to today's topic; Coyotes. Many people think that coyotes are out to get you, eat your chickens or do something else awful. However, coyote's diet consists mainly of small rodents like mice. Who needs a cat? Just get a coyote and you are set. coyotes, if you ask me, are amazing beautiful creatures. They look like small wolves. Speaking of wolves does anyone know if Vermont has wolves? I will answer that in the next post tell me your answers in the comments. They dig holes to sleep in. To communicate coyotes make a series of yelps, howls, whines, and barks. I personaly can verify the part about coyotes leaving you alone, one day I was out in the woods and a coyote ran directly in front of me. I headed home instantly because I didn't know where the rest of the pack was. But the coyote left me alone. However, there is another answer to this question. Long ago there was a type of wolf in Vermont called the red wolf. Scientists have taken DNA samples from these wolves and compared it to what we call the eastern coyote and it was almost Identical. Therefore scientifically there are no wolves in Vermont, but theoretically, there are no coyotes in Vermont only wolves. Good job Jess. Now on to today's topic: deer. I chose this animal today because deer hunting season for the rifle just started. Let me know in the comments if you would like to hear about the importance of hunting in nature. Anyway back to deer, everybody knows what a deer is, however, most people don't realize that moose, white-tailed deer, caribou or reindeer, antelope, gazelles, Chinese water deer, and many others are all part of the deer family. Baby deer are called fauns. Fauns are typically brown with white spots. Here is a question for you. However here are some facts you might not have known about them.  First of all, all the girls don't like catching their own food, in fact, they purposefully go off in steel other birds food and eat from dumpsters. In fact, Benjamin Franklin did not like the bald eagle because of this habit and our national bird was nearly a turkey.  Question: what famous fish catcher do you Bald eagles like to steal from?  Post your answer in the comments below. Now back to Eagles did you know that eagles mate for life.  They work together to build giant nests and build on them year after year.  The largest one was 9 feet 6 inches (2.9 meters) wide and 20 feet (6 meters) deep weighing more than two tons or 4,409 pounds.  Bald eagles and other hawks, eagles, owles, and falcons were all put on the endagered list because of habitat loss and an insect repellent called DDT. They are both technically correct. However, bald eagles have been killed stealing fish from bears. The first guess was actually the one I was looking for. The Osprey is actually a great target for bald eagles because their diet is 99% fish so they will just keep coming back for more(more fish not more getting stolen from). As you might have noticed by the title the osprey is today's topic. The osprey is also known as the "fish hawk" or "fish eagle." Ospreys fly 30 to 100 feet up in the air until they spot a fish than they dive at an angle so the fish don't see see their shadow. And they grab the fish out of the water. They can completely submerge themselves. If a fish is too big the osprey will use its wings as oars and swim the fish back to shore. Personally, the osprey is my favorite raptor apparently a plane designer felt the same way. The Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey is an American multi-mission, tiltrotor military aircraft with both vertical takeoff and landing, and short takeoff and landing capabilities. It is designed to combine the functionality of a conventional helicopter with the long-range, high-speed cruise performance of a turboprop aircraft. By the way sorry for the delay in this post.
