The New York Times published an article explaining what happened at the Boston Marathon in 2013. The authors, John Eligon and Michael Cooper, gave a short description of the bombing at the finish line of the well- known marathon. The title of the article explains how many were directly affected by this tragic attack stating, Blasts at Boston Marathon Kill 3 and Injure 100. As one gets deeper into the article, there are first hand experiences of the bombing and how authorities went about this event. Eligon and Cooper explain how this brutal attack left everyone in shock and chaos.

This medium opens with an intriguing title which draws people into the topic. It causes people to want to read deeper and learn more about the attack on one of the biggest cities and most popular marathon. This article gives everyone a deeper understanding about what happened and how people felt about this event. The authors included quotes from people who experienced the bombing or helped deal with the aftermath. They help people realize the initial reaction of the bombing. One runner says, “The first one went off, I thought it was a big celebratory thing, and I just kept going” (Eligon and Cooper). Reading this, shows how people first felt about an attack that significantly increased the public fear forever.

Hearing about a bombing at such a huge marathon shook me to the core. It strengthened the fear that was already incorporated into our society. I thought that this form of medium got the message across very well, pulling people in with a bold title. It was interesting, yet very informative and educated me on the event of the Boston Marathon Bombing.

This video aired on abc news just minutes after the bombing of the Boston Marathon. Although it is a short video, it captures the chaos of the event as it was put on air so soon after the bombing. The camera shakes as it tries to capture the injured and the authorities trying to help. The news reporter has little information about the bombing because the event happened so recently. He only informs the public that there was a bombing at the finish line of the Boston Marathon.

This medium is significant to the topic because it gives people an image of what really happened. There could not have been much editing done to the footage because of how soon it was aired after the bombing. People get a first hand experience of what happened because they can watch the commotion of the bombing aftermath. Videos and pictures give people a clear image of what truly happened at events. Sharing this video allows everyone to become informed about the immediate effect of the Boston Marathon Bombing and the true emotions of everyone that experienced the event.

Personally, I was extremely shocked by this video. It amazed me that it aired so shortly after the bombing and showed the actual chaos without video editing. The commotion of everyone running around and people hurt on the floor stressed me out and made me feel like I was in that moment. I remember hearing about this event while I was in my 8th grade math class and not even thinking it was real. This video gave me a clear description of what happened on the day of the Boston Marathon and that shook me up.

These are few of the many live tweets from the Boston Marathon Bombing. Just 10 minutes after the explosion, Boston Globe tweeted about the bombing at the finish line of the Boston Marathon. This live news, available to all, was then followed up by the Boston Police Department updating on the status of the injured and dead. Because these were live tweets, the facts they gave are different than the true facts known today due to the knowledge gained throughout the whole experience of the Boston Marathon Bombing.

Twitter is a place where the young and old come together and share news in different ways. From teenage girls to politicians, Twitter shares news to all of their users. These live tweets informed people just 10 minutes after the bombing and all of these accounts are very popular on Twitter, attracting attention from almost everyone. People were able to receive live updates and become informed through this popular social media application. Because Twitter has so many individual producers, anyone was able to share what they knew about the bombing and everyone could see what people were sharing.

I think it’s very interesting that people who were just scrolling through Twitter in their free time, just looking for funny videos, on this day were able to become informed of the Boston Marathon bombing just minutes after it happened. It is amazing how much information is gained through Twitter because of all the little voices coming together. I never really looked at Twitter as an informative news application, but as more of a social network where I can connect with my friends and share funny pictures. I think Twitter is a great way to spread news and it shared the news of the bombing very effectively.

The information published on Wikipedia gives a clear description of the event of the Boston Marathon Bombing. It gives detailed information of what happened on the day and why it happened. It describes who was responsible for the bombing, how many people were injured, the extremes of the injuries, how many people died, and the overall effects of this horrific day. It also states who the bombers were and how they were found. These facts have been changed and updated since the day of the Boston Marathon bombing, allowing there to be ample information about this event.

This medium is significant to the topic because, unlike the other social media platforms, Wikipedia has the concluded effects of the bombing. Wikipedia informs the public about almost every detail of the event because it was not only published a few minutes or days after the event, but it can be updated up until the present day. Wikipedia allows anyone to edit its content which is a detriment and a benefit. It benefits the public because it allows any information about the event to be published. This is all good until the information posted could be false. Wikipedia contains a lot of useful and important facts about events from everyone, but these facts are not always correct which may lead to a misinformed public.

I was used to seeing media of the bombing just days or minutes after the bombing, which does not have all of the information about the event. Unfortunately, it can be hard for me to trust because the details presented might not be correct. However, I did like how much information I was able to gain from this one website and it taught me a lot more about the event.
