Gandhi wanted everyone to be equal and to be who they were. In Document A Gandhi wrote a letter to Lord Irwin. In Gandhi's letter Gandhi refers to Lord Irwin as "friend". Lord Irwin is the English governor of India, so Gandhi calling the governor "friend" is surprising. In the Document,  Gandhi talks about "civil disobedience". In document B Gandhi was arrested during The Dharasana Salt Works on May 21, 1930. Although Gandhi was arrested during this time he fought back peacefully. A lot of people were injured (320) and 2 killed. The people participating in the raid did not fight back, they wee beaten with sticks and clubs and stayed within their ranks.  The Salt March was filed by reported Webb Miller and was in 1350 newspapers around the world. Document C provides a reflection from Gandhi when he was in Johannesburg in 1908. Gandhi at the time was working as a lawyer and studying law. In the reflection Gandhi found out that he protesters were arrested and sentenced for three months. Gandhi's nonviolence worked because when he found out about this he requested that he should be sentenced even longer than the protesters. Gandhi explained to the Magistrate, "If these men had committed an offense, I had committed a greater offense... upon me the heaviest penalty." There is an old folk tale that if you put salt on a bird's tail you would be able to catch it. The graphic shows Gandhi salting a lions tail. The lion represents the British Empire in the cartoon. The source of the cartoon is The London Graphic Illustrator, a British political magazine. The date that the cartoon was released was May 24, 1930, which was near the Salt March and other following events. Document D shows that Gandhi's nonviolence worked is because Gandhi was not violent with the British Empire in any kind of way.
