Charles Dickens was born in 1812 at Portsmouth, in England, and he was one of the most famous and greatest writer of all time.

his most famous books were Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, Great Expectation and A Christmas Carol.

Charles became famous for his books, wich used to talk about social and political issues, usually making social protest. Dickens always used to use emotional stories and lively characters for his stories, to evidence life conditions of poor people and social inequality.

In "A Christmas Carol", Dickens reflects in a perfect way his worries about social inequality; in facts through the main character, "Scrooge", Charles criticizes social politics of 1900's London, wich often ingnore the pain of poor people, promoting values of kindness and altruism. In this contest "A Christmas Carol" it's not only a christmas story, but an illustration of Dickens's though on moral responsibility, individual or collective.

The Victorian age (1837-1901) was a period of rapid transformation for London, which became one of the largest and most influential cities in the world. Population growth and industrialization brought progress, such as the construction of the subway and the sewage system, but also serious social problems, such as overcrowding and poverty in working-class neighborhoods. The city was a cultural center, with authors such as Charles Dickens and major events such as the Universal Exhibition of 1851, but it was also marked by contrasts and mysteries, such as the crimes of Jack the Ripper. London represented the symbol of progress and British power, but also revealed the profound inequalities of the era.
