Video one contains information on renters’ insurance. It provides information regarding the personal liabilities that insurance covers, which many people do not consider. An example of this used in the video is an injury of another individual or damages to another unit in which you can become liable and may be required to pay for damages incurred. The renter’s insurance will not only cover the cost of the damages but the defense that may be needed to represent you in court if it comes to that. If you don’t have renters’ insurance, this can become very costly. The video also covers information about personal living expenses. Meaning that if these damages make your home unlivable while repairs are happening, you will need to find temporary housing. If the cost of this is greater than your regular living expenses, this would be covered under your insurance. Also, if there was an emergency that required the evacuation of the premises, insurance would cover the cost of a hotel. Lastly, the video ends with the suggestion of knowing your valuables, and the costs to replace the items.

I chose to include this video on my Padlet because the information contained in the video is very informative and straightforward. It includes factors that some individuals may not take into consideration, such as personal liability and personal living expenses while providing scenarios for each. A piece of information that I found useful in this was how it brought up how renters’ insurance would cover the cost of a lawyer if a situation needed that. That was something I was not aware of but feel better knowing as lawyers are very costly.

Video two contains in-depth detail about multiple different aspects of renters’ insurance. The video asks multiple questions that renters need to consider while renting if a situation were to incur. The questions are as follows; where would you stay? Would you be able to afford a hotel? How would you pay to replace your personal property? It then explains that the landlord’s insurance for the building does not cover any of these things. The video then discusses what renters’ insurance does cover. This includes coverage on personal items lost due to fire, smoke, wind, hail, theft, vandalism, and water damage. Coverage also includes the cost of a hotel, food, and additional living expenses while your home is not livable. Lastly, coverage also includes personal liability coverage, which protects yourself, and members of your family against claims that have been caused by unintentional acts done inside or outside of your home. Along with this, the liability coverage also covers property damage, health care bills, and legal expenses if you were in a lawsuit.

I chose to include this video on my Padlet as it goes in even greater depth than a video one.

Video three is interesting as the topic is renters’ insurance with a roommate. It first explains the basics of renters insurance, and that when more people are living in the home, the risks are increased. The video also explains how landlords’ insurance is different from renters, as landlords need insurance to cover the building, the appliances within the building, window coverings, and additional items that tenants may be in use of. The video also explains the criteria that are included in how your personal belongings may be damaged, which that may include earthquakes depending on the policy. The video also debunks myths that individuals have when it comes to renters’ insurance. Things like that if you don’t have a lot of personal belongings, you won’t need the insurance, or that insurance is unaffordable. Also, in the video on the topic of roommates, some insurance provides allow a shared policy that can be split between the individuals. This may seem like a good idea to some, but the video explains why individuals should have separate policies even though they share the home. These reasons include complications with personal losses, claim payments, and simply the chance of not having enough coverage for personal needs.

I chose to include this video on my Padlet as is an interesting choice to think about the option of splitting insurance. Many individuals share their homes, and this video provides great information on why they might or might not want to share their renter’s insurance. One piece of information that I found useful in this video is that when sharing an insurance policy, it makes it more challenging to have full coverage for each person’s individual needs. Each person has different personal belongings at different values, which is difficult to tailor towards when sharing the policy.

The video explains in detail what exactly landlord insurance is, and how it just projects the building, furnishing in the building such as a fridge and stove, but not you as the tenant and your items. The video then explains why you as a tenant will want to purchase renters’ insurance while providing multiple reasons and various scenarios that could incur.
I chose to include this video in my Padlet as I think it is important for renters to be aware of the differences between landlord’s insurance vs. renters’ insurance and have a clear understanding of how landlords’ insurance offers no protection to you as the renter.

When learning the topic of renters insurance many things surprised me. I was not aware of how much the insurance could cover, especially how it covers situations that can occur even outside of your home. I was also now aware of how customizable the insurance can be, and how there can be an option to split insurance with a roommate. My perspective of renters insurance has been completely changed.

This topic is relevant to me as I do have tenants’ insurance currently. In 2020 I had been shopping around for new car insurance and when signing up for new insurance through Allstate I had switched my renter’s insurance to them as well. This was my first time dealing with any insurance as my partner had dealt with it previously. Working through this assignment made me think about when I was setting up the car and renters’ insurance, and specifically the questions I was asked when it came to our home. I remember being asked how old the building was, how close we were to the fire department, the type of water damage coverage we would need, and if I was a student to get a discount.

3. If you could pass on your knowledge to a family member or friend, what do you think is the most important thing to pass on?

I think the most important thing to pass on is just the importance of renters insurance. It covers a lot of things I believe most people would not be aware of. I would pass on the knowledge I have learned on what exactly basic renters’ insurance covers., while providing different questions renters should ask themselves, followed by some scenarios the videos provided.
