The North imposed a tariff on all foreign imports, however the South did not like this because they viewed it as a disadvantage for them in contrast to the business advantage for the North. He attempted to sue his former master, but was unable to and led to more tension betweeen the North an south. The court stated that slaves and people of color had little to no rights and were not considered a US citizen. The Dred Scott case was closed as he was unsuccessful to sue due to him having not rights.
