The nullification crisis of 1860 was between the South and the North. The North imposed a tariff on all foreign imports, however the South did not like this because they viewed it as a disadvantage for them in contrast to the business advantage for the North. In result, the South nullified the law and did not pay the taxes due to their belief in States Rights. This angered the North because the States rights of the South could override the Federal laws.

Dred Scott was a slave from the south that escaped from the North. He attempted to sue his former master, but was unable to and led to more tension betweeen the North an south. The court stated that slaves and people of color had little to no rights and were not considered a US citizen. The Dred Scott case was closed as he was unsuccessful to sue due to him having not rights. This caused the North to become more unhappy with the South because the case would benifit the spread of slavery.

Following the election of Abraham Lincoln, the southern states succeded from the US and became the Confederates. This angered the North because they had no federal right to leave the US so this started the Civil War. At first, the war was about states rights but then it also became a war over slavery. The Union and the Confederates fought as a "seperate" military with the North having the upper hand due to larger military and population.
