Sens Cathedral is a national monument of France. The architecture has a flamboyant style consisting of a central nave and two side aisles. Sens Cathedral was built in 1164, a time in which Sens was thriving economically and growing in population. The cathedral was dedicated to Saint Stephen, the Archbishop of Sens.

Canterbury Cathedral was originally founded by Augustine of Canterbury in 597, but it was completely rebuilt in the 1070s with a Gothic architectural style by Lanfranc. It includes unique architectural features such as fan vaulting and archways. The Canterbury Cathedral is known for the event of Archbishop Thomas Becket's assassination in 1170. It includes a display of his shrine inside the cathedral, making it an important site of Christian pilgrimage.

Notre-Dame de Paris is an iconic medieval Catholic cathedral that was built on an island in the Seine River in Paris, France. This cathedral is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Its unique gothic architectural features such as the rib vault and flying buttress set it apart from early French architecture. Notre-Dame de Paris suffered damage during the French Revolution of the 1790s, however, it was restored in the mid-1800s. The cathedral faced even more damage in 2019 when a fire burned much of the roof. The cathedral is currently under restoration to preserve its historic architecture.

Notre Dame de Reims is a Roman Catholic cathedral located on the Vesle River. Previously known as the Carolingian cathedral, Archbishop Samson of Mauvoisin, expanded the cathedral preserving the existing nave, and added two towers with Gothic style in the 12th century. More additions were attached to the cathedral in the 13th and 14th centuries. The coronations of the kings of France were held here making it one of the most important works of Gothic architecture. Notre Dame de Reims was significantly damaged during World War I and saw massive restorations in the 20th century.

Cologne Cathedral is an iconic German Catholicism monument and is the seat of the Archbishop of Cologne. The two medieval towers of the cathedral give it the largest facade of any church in the world. The Cologne Cathedral began construction in 1248, but was not truly completed until 1880 due to limited funding.

The Basilica of Saint-Denis has great historical and architectural significance in France. The cathedral is believed to be the location where the first bishop of Paris, Saint-Denis was buried as well as many kids of France. In 1122, a decaying church was replaced by the Basilica of Saint-Denis, ordered by Abbot Suger. The new cathedral had a revolutionary architectural aesthetic, marking the birth of Gothic architecture.

Amiens Cathedral is the largest Roman Catholic church in France, home to the Bishop of Amiens. The architecture of the Amiens Cathedral encompasses a High Gothic style that maximizes the internal space of the church to reach for the heavens and create more natural lighting. Previous to the construction of Amiens Cathedral, a small church was set on this land, but burned down in 1218.

St. Stephens Cathedral was dedicated to Saint Stephen in 1147 and completed in 1160, however, restoration projects continue to the present day. The cathedral has held many significant Austrian historical events, becoming the most important religious building in Vienna. In the 12th century, Vienna had become a popular location for German settlement, demanding a larger church to meet religious demands.

Construction of the Belfry of Ghent began in 1313 and continued through wars, plagues and political disorder. A gilded dragon from Bruges sits at the top of the main tower which is a symbol of protection of Ghent. The Belfry of Ghent serves several purposes as a bell tower and a watchtower. The top tower has been reconstructed over the years to allow for more bells.

Construction of the Zagreb Cathedral was completed in 1217, but the original building was destroyed by the Mongols in 1242 and rebuilt. Tension with the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century called for the construction of protective walls surrounding the cathedral and in the 17th century, a watchtower was installed and used as a military tool against the Ottomans. The Zagreb Cathedral was damaged again in 1880 from a severe earthquake leading to additional reconstruction and repairs.

The oldest parts of the Lincoln Cathedral date back to 1072 when construction of the cathedral began. The building was severely damaged in 1185 from an earthquake and rebuilt with Gothic architectural style in the following centuries. The Lincoln Cathedral is built on a high hill, protecting one of the most important cities in the country.

Wells Cathedral is a Roman Catholic Cathedral that replaced an earlier Anglican cathedral when King Henry VIII split from Rome in 1175. The cathedral has two central towers that act as dominant Gothic features that broke away from previous Romanesque styles. Uniquely, Wells Cathedral includes an original clock mechanism that strikes every quarter.

Orvieto Cathedral was built under the orders of Pope Urban IV to provide shelter for the Corporal of Bolsena, the relic of a miracle. The architecture of the Orvieto Cathedral includes designs from the 14th century to the 10th century with stained glass windows, mosaics, and bronze doors. The architectural features of the cathedral show the transition from Romanesque to Gothic architecture throughout the 1200s.

Westminster Abbey holds the shrine of St. Edward the Confessor, the tombs of kings and queens, and memorials to the famous and the great. It hosts every Coronation of England and many other royal events including royal weddings. The original structure was torn down by King Henry III in 1269 and reconstructed in classical Gothic architecture style using stone as the primary material.

The Milan Cathedral was built for the noble and working classes of Milan. Construction of the cathedral required the destruction of the ancient basilicas of Santa Maria Maggiore and Santa Tecla. Uniquely, the Milan Cathedral is built from Candoglia marble rather than the traditional Lombard brick which required expert stone-cutters and engineers.

Prior to the construction of the Chartres Cathedral, five different cathedrals occupied the land and were either destroyed by war or fire. Majority of the stained glass windows are original features that were well restored and maintained. The cathedral contains heavy flying buttresses, a key feature of Gothic architecture.

Saint Vitus Cathedral is located within the Prague Castle complex and includes the tombs of several Bohemian kings and Holy Roman emperors. The cathedral is one of three religious buildings on site. Construction of the cathedral began in 1344, but was delayed in 1419 due to war. The cathedral was left unfinished until the late 19th century when repairs began on the original part of the cathedral in a Neo-Gothic style.

Brussels Town Hall transformed the Brussels Grand-Place into the seat of local power. The east wing of the building was built first in 1401. The development of a more complex government system called for an expansion of the Town Hall with a longer wing built off of the original building in 1444. Unintentionally, the main tower's facade is asymmetrical and the main archway is off center which is most likely a consequence of the scattered construction.

Santa Maria del Fiore was constructed on the land of a previous cathedral that was consecrated in 393. A growing population of Florence called for a larger cathedral to keep up with increased religious demand. The architecture of the cathedral includes three large naves under an octogonal dome, designed by Arnolfo di Cambio.

The architectural style of the Burgos Cathedral is mainly Gothic, however one can find influence from Renaissance and Baroque styles as well. This is because the cathedral was built over 200 years, so elements from many centuries are included in the architecture. The main facade of the Burgos Cathedral consists of three stories and two bell towers. The Burgos Cathedral was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1984.
