Shakespeare presents the theme of conflict in Act 3, Scene 1 through the sub-themes of love and family. The love presented in this scene could contribute to the tension in this scene, the character Tybalt is presented to have a suspicious outlook on the character Romeo, this is emphasised through this secret of the love that Romeo and Juliet shared, but cannot have. The conflict is presented through family to have a meaningful effect in the reader towards the end of this scene creating this tension in the climax, so that the end of the story has a bigger impact in the end, on the audience. Dramatic irony, quote, analysis

The writer Shakespeare is able to present the theme of conflict as three dimensional, from exploring the duality iwthin this , similarly to the duality and irony in love and hate. Therefore, throuhg Shakespeare focusing on the particular characters of 'Tybalt', we can see that conflict used in attempt to save the lovers and citizens from their punishment and fate through the writers use of irony 'well peace be with you' in response to Mercutio. Shakespeare can also present the cycle of love and hate through the character 'Romeo' and how he is used in the structure of this extract. This is displayed through the irony of Emrcutio's death from Romeo's attempt at rescue. This demonstrates how the writer is foreshadowing the lovers fate and showing the the life-like cycle of love and hate.

The quote "Good King of cats, nothing but one of your nine lives" this suggests irony as the character Tybalt is eventually killed after his second battle. This use of the title King suggests that Tybalt is high up in the social hierarchy, which was very important in Elizabthan times as this influenced the opinions of other people. This quote links in with what Mercutio said to Tybalt before their battle that Tybalt was a rat catcher, again linking in with this animalistic imagery suggesting that Tybalt is independaent but could be seen as untrustworthy to those who he dislikes.

The writer can present the theme of conflict as a form of tradition within the partriarchal society. This could be shown through the flippancy of Mercutio's words ',en's eyes were made them look and them gaze' in response to the mention of duel. This on the surface could make conflict seem a 'tradition' through treating it as the function and breath of this partriarchal society however we could gain a deeper impression of Mercutio's challenge to the norms of this society and bring a new equilibrium. This is ultimately presented through chsllenging the character 'Tybalt', who is recognised by Elizabethan society as a character contributing to the social conformaties. This is where the character 'Mercutio' could be viewed as flawed, as he could be seen to interrupt Tybalt's reasonable purpose of battle.
