Beer was the cheapest and most popular drink. Children and adults both would drink it because the water wasn't clean. Since vegetables were cheaper than meat, the rich would avoid them which would cause health problems. The poor were not able to afford red meat, and had to catch birds or chickens to have meat. The image below is cooked sheep's head, a popular meal back in those days.

The audience brought food with them to Shakespeare's plays. There was evidence of grapes, figs, blackberries, raspberries, plums, and small animal bones, which make archaeologists believe that cooked chicken and rabbit were also brought to plays. They also brought oysters which were a popular delicacy during those times, and also brought tree nuts which one person from the late 1500s wrote about how loud and annoying the audience was when they cracked open nuts during performances.

Back in Shakespearean times, disease was everywhere. The plague had struck Europe and had led to the deaths of over millions of people. People threw garbage into the streets and allowed bacteria and viruses to run wild through towns. Food was often unsafe and most water sources were avoided because of how dirty they were.
