Dear Dad, 
I miss you terribly. I am resorting to carrying your humor forward with all the dumb jokes. I am trying to make Mom laugh everyday. It's easy. She laughs at all my jokes. I see now why you married her, because she is an easy mark. She is funny, and always optimistic. I am learning more from Mom now that you're gone than ever before. She is truly adorable. She is living in a cute apartment near me now, that includes transportation, so she can continue to be independent as long as possible, and she can be very stubborn! I am having her over for dinner every night, and I got her a puppy. I think she is as happy as she can be under the circumstances. You broke her heart (and mine) when you passed away. I used to joke with you saying I could not imagine how you made it 65 years with Mom. But now I get it. She's lovely and amazing. You picked the right girl! 5. This may be the very first time I think about you and talk to you in first person. You left me and my dad before I could remember anything... all I have is a picture of you holding a tiny little me; you looked like a stranger. I wondered what you would be like if you were here. My dad says you were made of iron and an incredible hard-worker. I can tell he really admires you, your passing was a devastating event for him. Too bad I wasn't old enough to comfort him and was probably right at the age of only knowing how to cause troubles. 

I want you to know that the little granddaughter you were holding in your arms has grown into a powerful woman. And I wonder if part of my stubbornness came from you. Thank you for the hard work you've done for your family, which has extended into mine, and the rest of the generations to come.

I was so lucky to have for so many years.  You taught me that faith, family, community and friendships could provide you with a foundation.  By keeping them close to your heart, you could overcome any difficulty.  When someone came to visit with you, you stopped everything and made sure you were present and in the moment.  You showed that you cared.  May the blessings of the day be the blessings you need the most.

I wrote this book about you because I knew, instinctively, that moments and people pass. That all time is fleeting. That it's true what people say--that we have to savor every second of this life. Ma, I knew that yours was a story that I had to tell, with mine mixed in it. I actually haven't read the book since you passed, to myself, to any audience for a reading, to anyone. I just can't. I thought I was writing the book to urge people to be politically engaged with the changing Bay Area and how high tech was/is erasing our livelihoods--and I was--but what I didn't know was that it would be one day be a memorial, a tribute to you when you were not here, because I never thought you would leave. Thank goodness I wrote the book. Thank goodness I had you in this lifetime. Thank you, for being the best mother to me. I wonder often, Where are you? Now I ask you one the same questions you used to ask me, Will you come visit me? Thank you Dad for always being patient, proud, and present. Present for the important stuff, and for the everyday things too. 

-For carrying backpacks when Mom and Dad told them they should learn to carry their own and earning every word of that third grade story about why you were the "favorite relative". 
-For every trip you made to California, and every postcard you sent them from every trip-teaching your grandchildren it was important to learn about the world.
-For making sure we knew there was good and evil in the world, and that evil should be met with resistance.
-For showing that your favorite teams were really your grandchildren's teams-She will always remember that you were the only one there for her 1000th point.
-For being the one person who always believed him, even when maybe you shouldn't, and most other people wouldn't.
-For always finding a way to make simple things fun!
-For sharing your love of music and singing with joy even though your voice could make heads turn (not in a good way)
-For being the first to "show up" when someone needed help. Still moving boxes and furniture at 80.
-For still having the energy to bike 20 miles and chase your great-grandchildren around the yard until just last year.
-For sharing your love of reading and sharing your eclectic taste in books - Helter Skelter, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, The Autobiography of Malcom X, The Source - all of these and more were on your nightstand when I was young.
-For letting us choose - who we were friends with, who we dated, who we married

Most of all thank you for trusting us all and earning our trust and for embodying the phrase "meet them where they are"
