One main reason that the Healthcare Inequality in America has gotten so bad is because the United States is the only developed country that relies on a privatized healthcare system. This means that people do not have access to corporate plans that are a benefit with their job do not have easy access to healthcare insurance.

This is relevant today because we are still dealing with a lack of accessible healthcare in this country. COVID-19 highlighted this fact with the disproportionate amount of African American deaths. Even in 2022, we are still the only developed nation in the world that has privatized healthcare, and it shows in the gaps of wealth, health, and soundness in people today.

The Affordable Care Act was a reform law enacted in March of 2010. Before the Affordable Care Act, around 20% of Americans had little to no health insurance at all. This act gave many Americans access to plans that they never had before. 45,000 people of that 20% died every year due to lack of healthcare.

The Affordable Care Act was very controversial at the time, even though it showed positive results. American conservatives objected to the tax increases and higher insurance premiums that came along with the Act. Some people working in the healthcare industry was critical of how much of a workload it put on medical providers. Because of the Affordable Care Act, you can now be fined if you do not have insurance. However, this part of the Affordable Care act was eliminated in 2019. Businesses also started cutting employee hours so they did not have to cover employees on corporate insurance plans. However, all of these negatives were not direct effects of the Act, other than tax increases and higher insurance premiums.

These issues have disproportionately affected minorities, such as people of color, and LGBTQ+. Income inequality also indirectly affects a families healthcare. A group of people that have been incredibly disproportionately affected is African Americans. These groups of people have less access to preventative healthcare, which ends up in more hospital visits overall. Research has found, according to the article, 'Health Care Inequality in the US', that "the higher your income, the better your health".

A famous figure that is related to Healthcare Inequality is Barack Obama. He is the one that put the Affordable Care Act into place, and he said that he would "make quality, affordable health care not a privilege, but a right". The Affordable Care Act has made healthcare accessible to many people who never had access to it before.

Important Events

An important event in the fight for Healthcare Equality was when Obama put the Affordable Care Act into place in March, 2010. This gave healthcare access to millions of Americans.
Another important event that happened was the COVID-19 pandemic. In this, it highlighted all of the inequalities in our healthcare system. It was statistically obvious that many more African Americans were dying to the virus in America at a higher rate than white people were, even though there are more white people in the country than African Americans. In an article by the Harvard School of Public Health titled 'COVID-19 pandemic highlights longstanding health inequities in U.S.', they say "Krieger listed a variety of factors that put people of color at greater risk from the virus. They are more likely to live in crowded conditions, to work in service jobs that put them in close proximity to others, to have to go to work because they can’t afford to miss it, to take public transportation, and to lack access to protective gear at work. They are also more likely to have pre-existing health conditions that increase the risk from COVID-19, and to lack access to health care and health insurance. And they may live in areas with high levels of air pollution, which, according to a recent Harvard Chan School study, is linked with increased risk of death from COVID-19." Systemically, all of the facts are there, which shows that there has to be a change.
