Educators can discuss different styles of writing, such as sonnets from Italy or haikus from japan, with our students. We can also incorporate diverse reading materials such as the memoir “Brown Girl Dreaming” by Jacqueline Woodson, which depicts the upbringing of an African American girl in the South. There are a wide variety of books and other reading material from different cultures that are readily available to help students strengthen their understanding and appreciation of others perspectives.

Educators can foster discussions and encourage research about culturally diverse scientific contributions with our students. We could highlight the ancient Egyptians contribution to medicine through their developed techniques for wound care and anatomical knowledge, as well as their contribution to astronomy through their creation of a calendar based on seasons and cycles of the moon. Educators could even discuss the agricultural contributions made by the Maya Civilization.

Educators can guide their students in exploring art forms, such as Māori Wood Carving or Indian Mandala Painting, and artists, such Frida Khalo or Picasso, from different cultures. They could use this knowledge in a project to replicate an art form. We can teach our students how to integrate different culturally significant symbols and patterns into their own artwork in a respectful, yet expressive way. Educators can also encourage respectful and informative discussions with their students about the context, implications, elements, and interpretations of artistic pieces.

For example, we could highlight India’s contribution of being the first to use the concept of zero, or how the Islamic Civilization made major advancements in number theory, the decimal system, trigonometry. We can also discuss the many cultural diverse mathematicians and their contributions, such as the Greek mathematician Archimedes, or the Iranian mathematician and professor Maryam Mirzakhani, the first woman to win the Fields Medal.

Multiculturalism has been displayed many times throughout our history, including:

Brown v. Board of Education (1954)

Segregation of African American students was found unconstitutional since segregation went against the 14th amendment, making it an unacceptable act in the eyes of the Supreme Court and many people in America. The Little Rock Nine attended Little Rock High School shortly after, making history in multicultural education.

The Civil Rights Act (1964)

Signed into law in 1964 shortly after the ruling of Brown v. Board, and prohibited all discrimination based on race, sex, religion, or national origin. In other words, this new law banned all discriminatory acts, including segregation in schools, public’s places, and work environments.

Refugee Act (1980)

During the Carter Presidency, 3 millions refugees were welcomes into America, and along with the individuals, their cultural perspectives were also welcomed and adopted into the American education system.

Confidence largely contributes to a students success. As educators, we can be more mindful of recognizing, accepting, and validating our student identity and experiences. Affirmation shows our students that they are seen, valued, and empowered. Not only must we recognize and appreciate our students differences, we must also make an effort to build and maintain a trusting and genuine relationship with each of them. Affirmations are as simple as telling a student “I appreciate your perspective,” or “I value your [insert quality]- you are a great asset to our classroom!”
