What is Anxiety

According to Medline Plus, Anxiety is a feeling of fear, dread, and uneasiness(Medline, 2016). There are a great amount of individuals today who have experienced anxiety before in their life. The point I want to venture into today is the amount of knowledge one has on the topic of anxiety disorders and how one can find out if they are battling a kind of anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders are conditions where anxiety is no longer a temporary feeling of anxiety.

Your anxiety will not go away but only worsen if one does not seek for help. As stated, anxiety disorders come in various form such as generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, phobias, separation, and social anxiety (Mayo Clinic 2018). There is a personal connection for me with generalized anxiety and phobias. Anxiety disorders do not have the highest alerts surrounding the issues which explains the low level of concern for those who struggle day to day with their anxiety disorder.

You are feeling nervous and tense and your heart rate has suddenly increased. After a while you start to sweat and have trouble concentrating and the only thing you can think about is what is worrying you. Believe it or not these are symptoms of anxiety. There is a high percentage of people who experience anxiety attacks almost every day.

If you had a close friend or relative that had an anxiety disorder would you know how to help? Would you know the first steps you would have to take to help them calm down and relive the problem at hand?

These questions are hard to answer if the proper knowledge is not given. Bringing awareness to this issue will help not only the person suffering but also those around them so they can receive the help they need and also deserve. We tend to look over anxiety as if it is not equally important as the other mental health problems.

The feeling of constant worrying is hard to fight off no matter how big or small the issue is at hand. Having anxiety is very tiring and can feel like burden on your shoulders. The image above is a personal representation of how I feel when I try to fight off my anxiety in order to remain calm and to mask how feel when I am around others.

I suffer from generalized anxiety and phobia thanatophbia to be exact. My thanatophbia was triggered by the death occurrence during the pandemic and losing close loved ones. I am not afraid of my own death but the death of my loved ones in my life. I personally know when I am having a panic attack when my heart feels as though it is beating out of my chest, I get really tense , and it is hard for my to contrate on what I am doing in the moment as if time is frozen. But that is just the feeling I internally, externally it looks as though I have "zoned out" or I am stuck and not abled to move. My attacks or flares are different from the stereotypical painted panic attack image.

This induvial states that she did not feel right sharing her story in comparison to the other disorders which is how most who suffer also feels. Which supports the issue at hand and proves that it can be intimating to admit you have anxiety because most feel as though it is not equally important as the other disorders. This saddens me to know this because personally it alters my life daily especially with decision making.
