5 Research-Based Strategies for Overcoming Procrastination

by Chris BaileyOctober 04, 2017
Summary.

Why do we procrastinate, even though we know it’s against our best interests? And how can we overcome it? A careful look at the science behind procrastination reveals five tips. First, figure out which of seven triggers are set off by the task you want to avoid. Is it boring, frustrating, or difficult? Or perhaps it’s not personally meaningful to you? Then, try to reverse those triggers. If it’s boring, find a way to make getting it done fun. If it’s unstructured, create a detailed plan for completing it. Then, only spend as much time working on the task as you can muster. Since it’s easier to pick up an in-progress project, be sure to get it started as soon as you can. List the costs of not getting it done. And, lastly, get rid of distractions, especially digital ones.

Chances are that at this very moment you’re procrastinating on something. Maybe you’re even reading this article to do so.

Here are some advices I came up with:1)Tackle your most important task for 15 minutes. For this you need to set a timer and just get started! Instead of thinking about the total number of hours you’re about to work for, just start.2)Break tasks down into small chunks.Instead of thinking about everything you have to do like one big obstacle, break it all down into tiny pieces.3)Start your day with the hardest tasks. You’ll feel better when the hardest one is done, and then you can move on to a few easier tasks for the rest of the day.4)Promise yourself you’ll get a reward when it’s done.Motivate yourself with something you love. As for me, I motivate myself with ice cream and sweets :)5)Pick a workspace that works for you.Figure out where you’ll be doing most of your work. This may be the library, a coffee shop, your local bookstore, or a home office.

I think that for many people, the main time killer is the phone. So I have some tips. First, disable notifications for applications such as wildberries, any games and other applications where there is no important information. So, during the day, we will receive only messages or calls. Secondly, when you are performing some task, turn on the "do not disturb" mode. This mode doesn’t allow any notifications so you won’t be distracted. And finally, find time to rest without a phone. You can walk down the street or meditate, this will help the brain recover.
