The author portrays this taking place when he talks about how a curious investigator might be perplexed about the plaque on Hester and Dimmesdale’s grave which says “On a field, sable, the letter a, gules.” The fact that the curious investigator is perplexed by the plaque means he doesn’t recognize the letter A as being a reference to Hester. That Hesters story has changed in such a way where the scarlet letter no longer immediately signifies her.

Another time the author shows this taking place is right at the end of the book. It is shown when the man who had opened the box with the Scarlet letter in it all the way back in the custom house: introductory to the scarlet letter chapter expresses surprise about the story of the scarlet letter after finishing it. This again shows that the story of the scarlet letter had been changed so much through the passing of time, that he perceives the original version as a brand new story.

Introduction

The children’s game called the broken telephone is a great first step to understanding why stories change over time. To play the game you have a large number of people line up. The person on the end of one side of the line comes up with a phrase and whispers it to the next person without letting anybody else hear it. That person then whispered it to the next person in line without letting anybody else hear it. This continues until the end of the line at which point in time dear last person that was whispered the phrase says it out loud. Usually, that phrase is very different from the one which the person at the front of the line came up with. This happens because every time a phrase transfers from one person to another they have a chance of making a mistake. The combination of all of these small mistakes build up into one big mistake and an ultimately unrecognizable phrase. Now imagine the phrase is a story and that the game is happening over hundreds of years and you can get a pretty good idea of why stories change over time.
