Netiquette is a set of guidelines for appropriate social and professional behavior. Netiquette refers to "etiquette" one uses on the internet.
     Practicing netiquette for students is important  because in the future when they are in a professional setting they will need to know how to properly and appropriately interact and communicate with their coworkers. Also, when they are interacting with teachers or professors a level of professionalism needs to be present.
    As for teachers, their relationships with all of their students needs to be professional at all times. Teachers need to uphold a level of respect in their profession and everything they do online will be taken into consideration in determining that respect. 
    Finally, everyone should have a separation between personal activities online and professional. They need to be kept separately because your employer can determine your employment status off of what they find online about you. What you do reflects on the company you work for and their reputation can be altered by what information is found about their employees.

When they think that way they don't see or think about the person that is on the other end of the information. This is about having manners when online and if you run into a dilemma think about what you would do if it was happening in real life, right in front of you.
     We chose this rule in netiquette because we thought that it was important to have students have this mind set when online. If they think about the people that are on the other ends of the computer they may make better decisions when posting online. 
    This is very closely connected with cyberbullying and everyone should be making an effort to stop cyberbullying. One effort towards that is by having teachers teach their students about cyberbullying and ways to stop or prevent it by having positive, appropriate manners online. Teaching them that cyberspace is just like real life should make them think twice about doing something that is illegal in real life, on the internet.

"Comments, actions, or images once posted online may stay long after you delete the material from your site. You don’t know who else has downloaded what you wrote or what search engine crawled and stored a photo. You can’t know who else sees your comments and judges you by them, nor will you have the opportunity in most cases to explain your comments" .It is important to remember that anything posted online can be copied, stored, and sent to other people therefore what you post online is permanent. Even if you delete it later, a posted photo or comment has already been circulated on the internet and you have no control over who sees it or how it is used.
 Also, many employers now search for your social media accounts when you apply for a job. They will look through everything on your accounts and if they were to see something they didn't like you could loose that job opportunity in the snap of a finger. This also goes for school administrators, coworkers, friends and family, you don't want them to see any inappropriate posts of you. For the classroom activities:
First, ask if anyone knows the definition of bullying or would like to share their definition of bullying. Then ask if anyone has a definition for cyber bullying. Finally, see if anyone wants to guess what percentage of children are cyber bullied in NY state? Following those responses reveal the recorded percentage of children that are cyber bullied. (43% have been and 70% of students are recorded as often seeing cyber bullying)

Following the showing of the video ask the class who would stand up and what would they do about cyber bullying? Before doing this I had not heard of Netiquette. I of course knew about being careful with what you post online, about cyber bullying and about being professional online because everything is permanent but I did not realize that all these pieces were part of a bigger idea. 
    I have always planned on having some kind of bully prevention discussion with my classes once I am a teacher and this helped me realize that I could expand it further to discuss other points of netiquette and teach them Netiquette as a whole. Maybe informing students about this earlier in life they will grow up knowing right and wrong and there will be less issues with it. 
   I also liked using Padlet because it was a different way of learning how to express and share information. Cyberbullying  is when one or more students threaten, humiliate, harass or target another student in any other way through the use of the Internet. This includes interactive technology or cell phones. Cyberbullying is not restricted to just messages on social media, but can include pictures, blogs and interactive games. Cyberbullying is a growing problem now that so many children have access to the internet. Kids now use the internet for school and leisure so there is plenty of time spent behind the screen of computer or cell phone. When people are behind the screen of a cell phone they are anonymous and feel as if they can say whatever they please. As an adult figure, it is important to teach children what to do in the case of cyberbullying. If they report the bullying and don't feed into the abuse, it can go a long way in stopping this behavior. 
     The reason we chose Cyberbullying is because it is so prevalent in society today. 17% of males and 20% of females have been cyberbullied in their life, which is far too many. This can lead to psychological, emotional and physical stress. 
     It is important to teach students about cyberbullying early. If we educate students at early ages we have a better chance to stop this growing problem. Cyberbullying has affected so many people and students should know the effects and consequences it has.

It is important to follow some rules when doing things such as typing on social media, writing emails, and working on Internet classrooms. A person can be reflected positively or negatively based on what they put on the internet. One component of this is spelling and grammar. If words are mis-spelled or there is poor grammar, it makes the message seem less formal, therefore reflecting you and the writing in a bad way. Going off of this point it is important that you ALWAYS  proofread your work. A great way to catch mistakes or things you would like to change is by reading the words aloud. Lastly it is important to use good tone in order to be professional. It is easy to come across bossy, rude or unprofessional when on the Internet. No one can see your body language or decipher messages from the other side of a screen. People should always check writing, (especially in emails and online classrooms) to make sure it is "polite and neutral". 
     We chose professionalism because it important to learn now rather than later. If we continue a pattern of saying "hey professor" it will become second nature. We also thought the spelling and grammar component were important. It is scary how many people misuse words such as "their, they're and there" or use text lingo in professional writing pieces. 
     It is crucial to teach students about professionalism because it can make or break their future. I've heard of the term netiquette but never really knew what it entailed. I never knew that there were so many components to netiquette. For example I didn't know "professionalism" and "cyberbullying" were both considered a part of netiquette because although they are somewhat similar, they focus on different things. This research has definitely confirmed how important it is to be cautious on the internet. Like Alanna said, everything on the Internet is permanent, so we must think before we write or speak online. Overall this project has taught me various components of netiquette and reminded me that everyone must be careful with what they say online. I will definitely teach netiquette in my classroom. Through this lesson students will be able to write an email to someone of higher power (teacher, boss etc.) in a professional manner. 
As a class we will go to the computer lab and format and write an essay. We will focus on the following components while writing:
1. Spelling and grammar- the students will make sure to write complete sentences using proper words and grammar. They will make sure to stay away from "text lingo"
2. Concise writing- students will practice concise writing in their email. We will focus on only writing what is necessary, and not rambling with unnecessary fluff. 
3. Using good tone- we will make sure the email does not seem too pushy, bossy or in anyway rude. We want to get our point across in a polite manner. 
4. Proof reading- finally the students will proofread their email. We will have a checklist of what to look for when rereading it.
