The Soviet flag flew above the Kremlin in Moscow for the last time on December 25, 1991. Soviet republics (Ukraine, Georgia, Belarus, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan) have previously announced their withdrawal from the Soviet Union. The once-mighty Soviet Union had crumbled, owing in large part to Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev's six-year tenure as head of the USSR, which saw him execute plenty of radical changes. However, Gorbachev , was dissatisfied with his country's demise and resigned on December 25. It was the peaceful conclusion to a long, scary, and murderous period in human history.

People started picking at the walls with tools, taking down souvenirs and slowly depleting the integrity of the wall. People who partook in this movement were known as "wallpeckers" because of the noise and repeated motion they produced when chipping away at the wall.
