I have always challenged all of my students and focused on growth mindset. After this certification, I want to make sure to use the icons and connect curriculum across contents to bring up their motivation and ability to connect what we do in class to the real world. In addition, I want to stress more of the ability for ALL my students to be successful and be top learners and not only my top achievers.

I have learned to view my GATE students, and ALL students a little differently. The content I have learned from these modules will continue to impact my approach and my philosophy in the classroom, whether virtual or in person. In the past, I did not have a strong understanding of the characteristics of gifted individuals. Now I am starting to understand the psychology of giftedness. I am going to move forward with this information by taking the time to address these issues (procrastination, perfectionism, etc) more appropriately. I can also use this information to help parents understand their gifted children.

I have developed a heightened awareness of the gifted traits my students may demonstrate, and how to respond in ways to help develop more positive behaviors in the classroom. I have a better understanding of the needs of my students who are gifted.

There are so many more aspects to a gifted learner than just being "smart." These modules really reminded me and brought to light other traits I should be looking out for in students. It also reinforced the importance of giving students choice early on to begin to see the different sparks of creativity in different areas as they show what they are capable of through different means.

I have learned that it may not always be obvious that a student is gifted. They may be gifted in some content areas, but not others. This impacts my teaching philosophy because I will not count a student out as gifted just because they are not excelling in ALL areas.

The modules have taught me to w=look at the students who may "fly under the radar" and may not always have the best grades or most outspoken, but ability level is high. Sometimes looking at the way assignment is presented doesn't attract their interests, but identifying the things they are interested in and using it as an example or including it may draw them in.

In reflection, I have learned that there are so many different angles to GATE students. They are not typical and we need to remember to bring creativity and to level up my activities. I need to continuously reinforce the idea that students have choice, passions and that everyone is a lifelong learner and must put in the effort to reap the benefits. If I challenge my students, they will continue to challenge themselves.

I learned that it is important to value process over product. It is also important to teach skills to support students' as learners, for example executive functioning skills and the development of growth mindsets. Understanding the needs of gifted children is essential if we wish to meet their needs. Teaching these students that not everything will come easily at all times. I often feel my GATE students get left behind. This training really helped me to hone back in on strategies that will better support them. I always felt an obligation to do my best for my GATE kids. Part of it is because I, myself, am a GATE kid and feel I can offer a perspective my students may have never heard. Even though I have been motivated to help my GATE students, I never really had the tools to truly help them. Just a surface level look at this helped me realize what I can do to change my teaching. I am now of the belief that explicitly explaining goals, offering more one-on-one time to talk with students who fail for the first time, and constructing good lessons is what matters to helping my GATE and other students do well.

What further steps can we take to support our gifted learners? I think for me personally, it will
be to constantly remember to never use the word “smart” in my classroom. I don’t want to
perpetuate the tragedy of using this word because students need to develop “grit” to be used
when life gets hard. I don’t want to mislead my students into thinking that they “know it all” or
that life will be easy for them. This would be a huge disservice to my gifted students. I can
continue to nurture their giftedness and foster the theme of “growth mindset” to prepare them for
challenges of the future.

This training has helped me to understand myself as a learner! Once I began to realize the function of so many of my own tendencies and what I experienced in school, it has helped me to notice the same signs in my gifted students. Not only can I relate and understand them better as a result, but I also can actually serve them more efficiently and help them navigate their own strengths and experiences. Today's lesson with the the graph of achievement and effort really struck a chord with me. As a first year teacher, I know I have much to learn in the classroom. I truly think that this GATE training has really opened my eyes to the common misconceptions that occur as a new educator. The main takeaway that I found the most insightful is that some of our GATE students tend to be our "behavioral issue" students. This was eye opening and provided a different perspective rather than the usual, GATE students are the "best" students. During my credential program, I was taught to "teach to the EL student" to provide all the scaffolding necessary for all students to succeed. Students who are classified GATE require and deserve differentiation when it comes to lesson design. They are a population that needs to be understood in a case by case basis and may need more than just academic support to adapt, but they also need socio-emotional support specific to their needs. Using the prompts for depth and complexity is a tool for developing analytical thinking, metacognitive systems of learning, collaboration and generating academic vocabulary and discussion.

Level 1 GATE training has made me realize that all students, regardless of level, could benefit from these depth and complexity thinking prompts. As a CLAS teacher, I think that it's imperative that we display and embed these thinking prompts in all lesson planning, teacher modeling and training that we will do in the future.

The information that I have learned in these modules will impact my teaching and working with others by giving me a deeper understanding of unique minds, and the need to differentiate. Additionally, in working with colleagues, I can consider the multiple perspectives and characteristics that affect perceptions and beliefs. I also see how these habits, understanding, and the Depth and Complexity Prompts can be incorporated into all instruction, actually creating "Best First Instruction" for all with embedded differentiation and a common language. I see the value of all teachers understanding these things from TK - high school!

Understanding the different needs of our high performing students along with those of our twice exceptional students, it is clear that teachers need to apply lot more sensitivity and mindfulness to ensure these students are able to achieve their full potential.

I thought I would learn ways in which I could enable higher-level thinking and learning in my classes to support GATE students, but I think what I will most use in my classroom is the knowledge of how a GATE students thinks, feels, and responds to classroom activities and environment. Being equipped with this knowledge will allow me to better understand these students and therefore better support them in their successes, as well as areas of growth. As an ELA teacher, many of my students are in honors math, and not ELA. The Level 1 GATE training provided a lot of valuable insight into the minds and habits of my gifted and talented learners. Module 4 in particular helped me understand the significance of emphasizing the learning process over the end result (academic achievement) to better prepare gifted students to be lifetime learners. This training has already given me a different perspective on teaching. I find myself knowing when my GATE students are able and ready to push forward and dive deeper. Embedding the depth and complexity prompts within my lessons will be key. My first action will be to get them comfortable with the prompts so that they are can recall them in order to see more.

I have gained a foundational understanding of the intricacies of the gifted learner and strategies which can be used to heighten their abilities. Gifted learners like all learners will benefit from a rigorous, challenging, and supporting environment. To this end I will reinforce the principals of a growth mindset for myself as well as my students. The Level 1 GATE training has helped me realize again how GATE students have needs that are "sometimes" not met in the educational setting. When a student is identified as GATE he/she/they need the GROWTH MIND-SET just as much as a student who is currently struggling. A GATE student has needs that are as complex as our Neurotypical Student. As a teacher, I need to be ready to challenge them intellectually but also understand if they balk at a task that seems challenging. I cannot assume they have all the required skills other develop. For example, a typical kindergartener who was not exposed to print at home may struggle to learn identify and master the sounds of letters. Once they master them they have a sense of accomplishment. If our GATE walk in with it mastered they may not develop that skill until Middle/High School. I need to be ready to be on the look out for those deficits, then remediate or teach those soft skills.

All the information that I was exposed to has given me the necessary tools to be able to challenge my students academically. By using the GATE icons and the GATE frames as a scaffold to help in the development of the students compartmenting their ideas. This support allows for the students to be creatively free in their responses and it challenges them to think outside the box.

GATE students need to be encouraged to have a growth mindset. We need to focus on hard work and believe that the brain is like a muscle: the more it stretches, the more flexible it becomes. A growth mindset leads to good habits and true success.

I have understood the importance of being aware of students with different needs regardless of academic level. Although first grade is simple in content, it is also a good age/grade for students (GATE) to develop and use technique and structures for present and future learning. I have learned that teaching my gifted and talented students about the importance of having a growth mind-set is essential. Our gifted students need to learn that the learning is a process and it must be a meaningful one instead of just focusing on the product. Teaching students the tools on how to focus on effort will motivate them to overcome challenging work. strategies and also enhanced many of the "GATE" practices I have incorporated into my teaching. Also, I have realized how I can use them much more effectively.
I think that the discussions and presentations about the social/emotional aspect of teaching "GATE" students has reminded me about how "prideful" they can appear, only to mask their insecurities.

After today's session I have become more aware of the needs and challenges that gifted students face as well as practices that I can implement to mitigate. Some ideas to consider are the social constructed labels we place on students that can create problems in their learning paths. Growth mindset is another concept that I had not correlated to gifted students. Since gifted students can also have a fixed mindset, that can limit their achievement.

One of the ways in which I was impacted was to understand my students' social-emotional needs. Through this training I have gained a new perspective on who can be gifted, and how gifted students may be wrongfully labeled as. I now see how easy it is to not consider students as gifted because of other labels they might have. This training has really inspired me to have a different outlook towards student who may have some GATE attributes. Just as we have learned in module 1, these students often struggle socially and can be very energetic. Rather than just focusing on helping and supporting them behaviorally, I should also ensure they are feeling challenged in the classroom. After attending module 3, I feel more confident in implementing GATE frames in my classroom. I think these are great learning tools that can be used for ALL students. After this training I feel much more confident taking on GATE icons. One of my concerns in teaching GATE was the ability to properly use them in class. Thanks to this training, I do not feel like creating a graphic organizer is difficult. I feel more prepared for next year! I am also aware that I have to encourage my students in GATE to have a mindset that focuses on growth instead of only focusing on percentages or letter grades. After completing the Level 1 training, O am much more comfortable in teaching and understanding GATE students. As many of the icons and ideas have changed from when I myself was a GATE students, this was very helpful in learning how to best educate these students. I also learned how many of the GATE icons can be translated into scaffolding methods for students that are not GATE identifies. I now know that gifted students can often look and act much different than the typical overachieving students, so I will try to better recognize these students that can easily go unnoticed.

I loved the portion where I got to learn about the uniqueness of 2e students and to dive into the backgrounds where gifted students can often become incarcerated or often become "troublemakers" in class simply because we as educators are not meeting our needs. There is so much insight into the mind of our gifted kiddos. I have already started using the depth and complexity icons and the kids are starting to refer to them. In regards to gifted and talented students, I have learned that it is important to continue uplifting and supporting them to be the most successful they can be. Sometimes these students can fall under the radar because they demonstrate exceptional knowledge or "disruptive" behavior, but it is important to keep in mind that we need to differentiate our instruction for them as well. Due to their giftedness, they can be affected socially, emotionally, and academically. I learned that GATE students can have :

decreased motivation if answers are supposed to be provided "one way"
feelings to shy away from unwanted attention as "the smart kid"
feelings of being rewarded for something "easy" so they feel as though they didn't earn the praise
feelings that current success doesn't necessarily determine future success
feelings of validation if their methodology in learning is different than others, instead of feeling "not smart"

Even though I am not currently teaching a GATE cluster, I frequently use D/C activities in my non-GATE classroom. Despite going through training almost 20 years ago, there were lots of new things to learn about using strategies and icons across all subjects. It was an inspiring refresher! I plan on starting the year "teaching them like they're GATE".

I have learned that gifted traits show up in diverse ways, especially for twice exceptional students. Focusing on the four GATE standards supports and challenges students to reach their highest potential. After completing Level 1, I am reminded of a lot of great concepts about Gifted Learners. I am reminded to consider their stress & anxiety levels that they place on themselves and that I need to nurture their stress (or acting out) instead of reacting to it. I am fortunate that I haven't had a gifted student "act out" in class, but in case this happens I feel better prepared to handle their emotions. I loved practicing the icons, but wish we spent more time on sharing how we have used them in the classroom. I wish we had more time to collaborate with other teachers. We have so many great ideas on how we do things in our classrooms, it would be great to see what others are doing (especially for brand new gate teachers). ----- LI

The information from level 1 will impact my teaching philosophy in a variety of ways. I will take the time to understand each individual student like usual, but take possible gifted students into consideration. After completing Level 1 of the GATE Certification, I recognize how important it is to identify our exceptional students as unique individuals that require an individualized and personalized learning experience in our classes. The information from the Level 1 modules impacts my teaching philosophy by reminding me how to look at my students' behavior that might sometimes be seen as negative. I realize I should take note in that behavior, notice the content that brought on that behavior, and what the child was saying with their behavior. The level 1 information also encourages a deeper connection to special interests in that we, as teachers, are encouraged to foster these interests with engaging and relevant material as well as tasks.

After completing the level 1 certification class I realize now that not all bad behaviors are from students that intend to be disruptive. Rather some of these behaviors are coming from students who are gifted and may need more/other support from the teacher to create more excitement in their learning. I've started to reflect on my practices and students and am realizing that I need to take a step back and think about each student as an individual and take the time to think about whether they may be gifted or not. I believe that this could impact all of my classes in a positive way while also helping individual students that have have been falling through the cracks and not yet found as gifted.

The GATE Level 1 Certification provided insight to the thoughts, feelsings, and experiences of students who are gifted. It reminds me to reflect on things I can do to meet their needs and help them continue to flourish. I also appreciated the tools shared, and I feel more confident in identifying gifted students and supporting them in the classroom.

This will help me with the one potential student I may have coming into my classroom this year who is possibly a GATE student. I revisited information previously learned several years ago. I am grateful to be reminded that GATE students know they are different and that they need to feel appreciated for their knowledge and talents. I am reminded that they also need teacher time to feel included in the class and to use that time to help them ask and answers questions and to challenge them. Giving them the support that they need to help them soar will challenge me to be a better teacher for them and other students.

I have learned that once you are GATE identified it stays with you always. My take-away phrase that I love is "I am not just smart, I work hard too!" The video from Ian Byrd really resonated with me that GATE students often get used to the idea that EASY= SMART and if it becomes NOT EASY= NOT SMART which can often lead to fear of trying. "We can do hard things!" A fear of failure often can manifest in these students. We want and need to suppport these students and differentiate versus making them tutors of the struggling students so that they can grow in their learning as well.

This first module really helped me see how important it is to differentiate instruction for all learners in our classroom and provide the necessary support them.
