According to Effective Online Teaching, "Cognitive presence is the ability of learners to construct knowledge together as they engage in interactions" (Stavredes p. 105). With Padlet, students are able to interact in real time to construct content knowledge concepts through peer interaction and engagement.

Padlet also supports social presence, which "contributes to the learning experience because it establishes learners as individuals and helps build interpersonal relationships that can have a positive impact on engagement in learning activities" (Stavredes p. 105). Each student is able to show individualism as they create content that they share with their classmates. Then students build interpersonal relationships as they learn to collaborate and appropriately contribute to other students' work.

"Teaching presence includes how an instructor facilitates the learning activities to support social and cognitive presence to help learners achieve course outcomes" (Stavredes p. 105). With Padlet, the instructor has the ability to guide students in a given direction through the use of participant requirements, assignment modeling, guiding questions, small groups, learning objectives, etc..

In your presentation, discuss strengths and weaknesses of Padlet.

The greatest strength of Padlet is its versatility. This free tool allows users to organize and present information while incorporating links, videos, audio, pictures or documents. Another benefit is the collaboration potential because multiple students can be posting and responding to work in real-time.

The weaknesses that I have found with Padlet include:

Students can delete their own work or other student's work. This can be difficult and at times impossible to recover.

Padlet has a feature that, when activated, shows student's names as they post. Although this is a deterrent, there is bound to be a student that posts something inappropriate.

When several people are collaborating, the wall can become large and awkward to read because the viewer has to scroll in several directions to see all of the content.
