For a moment he continued to stare at the ceiling. Then he rolled slowly over and faced the wall and lay silent. (ch3)

This quote puts more insurance on that Candy should of killed his dog instead of the other farmhands. The quote also brought up a question, If killing the dog was a violent act or an act of mercy?

In my eyes it was an act of mercy on the old dog but it was still in a violent way it was severed to the reader, from start to finish.

Crooks had reduced himself to nothing. There was no personality, no ego—nothing to arouse either like or dislike. He said, "Yes, ma'am," and his voice was toneless.

This is an other instance that Lennie has proved to the reader that he isn't as peaceful as George has built him up to be, to the other farm hands. Lennie was hurting an animal less than half his size just because the dog "looked" like it was going to bite him when they were playing. That's what puppies do, they playfully bite at times.
