A major theme of this story is gender roles as well as the treatment of mental health. From the beginning of the story, the narrator's thoughts on her own ailments are dismissed. The narrator even states that her husband scoffs at some of the things she says and her own opinions are often disregarded because her husband and brother know best. Just as well, throughout the duration of the story "The Yellow Wallpaper" the reader witnesses the stages of the narrators mania. Each time an issue arises about her health, John, the narrator's husband is quick to think of a practical remedy warns against anything that he sees as indulging his wife’s dangerous imagination or hysteria.

The setting of the story "The Yellow Wallpaper" is extremely important due to the fact that the surroundings of the narrator affect her in significant ways. The readers first learn that the narrator and her husband go to this house to help with her health. From the beginning, she remarks how unique the house is, from the garden to the wallpaper. The narrator goes on to describe their room, "It is a big, airy room, the whole floor nearly, with windows that look all ways, and air and sunshine galore. It was nursery first and then playroom and gymnasium, I should judge; for the windows are barred for little children, and there are rings and things in the walls". The entirety of the story takes place in the house which contributes to the importance of the setting.

4.C: Identify and describe details, diction, or syntax in a text that reveal a narrator’s or speaker’s perspective: What is a narrator’s or speaker’s tone toward a particular subject, and which diction, imagery, details, and syntax in the text contribute to that tone?

A major contribution that is provided for the readers to better understand the conditions in which this story is written. The narrator often makes remarks about how she is doing something because her husband or her brother advised her to do it or how they know best. The narrator states, "I get unreasonably angry with John sometimes. I'm sure I never used to be so sensitive. I think it is due to this nervous condition. But John says if I feel so, I shall neglect proper self-control; so I take pains to control myself before him, at least, and that makes me very tired". The reader can sense a feeling of discontent with her husband given off by the narrator but she often just gives in to what he orders.

4.D: Explain how a narrator’s reliability affects a narrative. To what extent can a narrator or speaker of a first-person point of view narrative be trusted? How does a narrator’s or speaker’s inclusion or exclusion of particular details affect their reliability?

In any narrative that uses a first-person perspective, you should always expect that the speakers point of view could be skewed. There are always biases and opinions that always change the way the narrator speaks and the story is told from the way they are seeing things as opposed to how they actually might be playing out. In this piece, the speaker is using the story almost as a journal, detailing specific moments and how they make her feel. However, because the narrator seems to be suffering from issues mentally, this negatively affects her reliability, especially once she starts fixating on the wallpaper.

5.C: Identify and explain the function of a symbol. Which object, action, or event represents an idea or concept beyond itself? How do these symbolic objects, actions, events, characters, and settings contribute to a text’s complexity and to the meaning of the work as a whole?

A symbol represents something beyond literal meaning. In the story "The Yellow Wallpaper" the wallpaper of a house that the narrator is staying in to recover has wallpaper in the main bedroom that is old and tearing. Some thing that others would just deem unpleasant and move on from became a point of fascination and obsession to the speaker. The narrator makes the wallpaper into a puzzle that she needs to figure out and discern, thus making it a symbol of the story. The wallpaper symbols the difficult and sometimes puzzling task of trying to figure out who you are as a person and the roles you have. As the speaker stares at the wallpaper for hours and trying to figure it out, the way the pieces work together and what the pictures mean as a whole.

5.D: Identify and explain the function of an image or imagery. Which words contribute to the sensory details in an image? What associations do images or imagery evoke? How do images and/or imagery emphasize ideas in a portion of text or throughout a text?

Imagery allows the reader to clearly see, touch, taste, smell, and hear what is happening in a work of literature. Imagery helps to let the audience experience different senses and glean an idea of what the characters are observing. As a major focus of the story, the author does a great job to give in depth descriptions of the house where this story takes place, and more importantly, the wallpaper. The author states, "It is stripped off the paper - in great patches all around the head of my bed, about as far as I can reach, and in a great place on the other side of the room low down. I never saw a worse paper in my life".
