Mindful Moments

In DUCKS at DCSZ we have been looking at ways to thread Mindfulness into the day, whether at the beginning, middle or end of the day. These opportunities are intentionally offered to help students take a quiet moment to practice a breathing technique or listen to calming music. At the beginning of the day it helps to promote focus, however in the middle of the day these moments are often helpful in finding some calm and promoting a feeling of wellness. These mindful moments last no longer than five minutes, but help children to build positive mental habits and develop important skills of self regulation.

Inspired by conversations in our EIM Student Wellbeing Collaboration Group, a DUCKS-wide Student Wellbeing program was developed in March of this year at DCSZ. It ran across two full days. The program was developed around six themes that support well being and link to our PSHE curriculum. These were: gratitude, friendship & connection, empathy, kindness, self esteem and purpose. Students moved around classrooms where they explored each theme through mindfulness, art, games and stories.

The Empathy Lab

As a teacher librarian, I find the Empathy Lab very insightful in two main ways.
1. As a source of research into the Power of Empathy
2. As a wealth of up-to-date books on Empathy
Furthermore, I have done the 4 modular programmes diving deeper into building children's empathy, literacy skills and social activism. I recommend this site for all those interested in student wellbeing as books are a real vehicle for exploring all sorts of emotions and issues.

The mission of this group is to raise empathy-educated generations, inspired to create a better world for everyone.

The belief is that this can be done by building children’s empathy, literacy and social activism through a systematic use of high-quality literature. The strategy builds on new scientific evidence showing the power of reading to build real-life empathy skills.

It has 4 key programmes:

· Creation of Empathy Day as a national day

. Schools’ Programme

· Annual Read for Empathy Guides

· Work with authors and illustrators whose work is empathetic

They are inspiring leaders who are doing a great job at developing it in the school.
