According to Ellis, Rudnitsky & Silverstein, (2004), concept maps are not new. They state that learning is a process that requires effort. It is a process that shows the bridging between pre-existing knowledge and new knowledge. They go on further to say that students have problems seeing the big picture due to the inability to assemble their knowledge in a workable way. Students have difficulty in apllying their knowledge to situations other than the environment it has been learnt. As such concept maps are a pedagogical tool allowing for the student to organise their learning in a useful way.

Ellis, G., Rudnitsky, A., & Silverstein, B. (2004).
