There are 10 different subjects that were mentioned in this chapter. Overall, there were three topics that stood out to me. They were alcohol, tobacco, and opioids. Many people do not know that alcohol is a drug. Many people drink alcohol to get loose but some people drink more than their body can handle. Alcohol has a depressant affect, "Alcohol overdose causes even more severe depressant effects (inability to feel pain, toxicity where the body vomits the poison, and finally unconsciousness or, worse, coma or death from severe toxic overdose)” (Dangers of Alcohol, Tobacco, Opiates and Other Drugs, 5). These effects depend on how much alcohol the person consumes. The next section that stood out to me was tobacco. Tobacco comes in many different types of products like chewing tobacco to cigarettes. There are over 4,000 chemicals in a cigarette that will cause many different problems, “It elevates heart rate and blood pressure, constricts blood vessels, irritates lung tissue, and diminishes your ability to taste and smell" (Dangers of Alcohol, Tobacco, Opiates and Other Drugs, 6). Tobacco is dangerous in every form it comes in due to the poisonous chemicals that are in it. The last section that stood out to me was the opioids.

Opioids are pain medications that help relive the pain signals in the body. Opioids can range from mild pain relievers to major pain relievers, “Hydrocodone products are the most commonly prescribed for a variety of painful conditions, including dental and injury-related pain” (Dangers of Alcohol, Tobacco, Opiates and Other Drugs, 6). Most opioids are prescribed to people by doctors for their pain. Overall, in this chapter there were many different types of drugs that will effect a persons body in a negative way. The three sections that I listed above are drugs that can be addicting to people will try them. Also mentioned in this chapter were ways to treat the addiction and stop those bad habits.

Medications are one way to treat addiction. When people go off of their addicted drug, they suffer from withdraws. Medication can help those withdraws from the drug and they could also help re-regulate normal brain function which can help with relapse. The next treatment option are behavioral treatments. Behavioral treatments help change the attitudes and behaviors of a person that is related to their drug abuse. These treatments help teach people different life skills that they could use to make their lives healthier. Some treatments only take a few weeks but other treatments can take months. It all depends on how much a person is abusing the drug. The final way that you can help the addiction of pain medication is using other medications wisely. A person can either use a non-steroidal medication that is anti-inflammatory. Or a person could also do physical therapy and exercise to help their injury.

My friends mom smoked for most of her life. But then she had a child and she wanted to change her ways so that she did not give her child a bad role model. She started slowly quitting. At first she reduced the amount of cigarettes she smoked every week. Then she went to her doctor and asked if there was any thing that she could do to stop smoking. But she did not want to go to a rehab facility, she just wanted a medication or something else that she could use. She wanted something where she could do the treatment but stay at home as well. She started using the treatment and she stopped smoking. She said at first the the withdraw was awful but over a course of a year, she quit smoking and stayed that way. She ended up getting a patch that helped people stop smoking. With motivation and determination she reached her goal after a lot of hard work.
