I believe the author uses his own experience to connect himself to Alex because he knows what Alex and the others have gone through. I also think the author uses the others as examples to show that others have had the same ideas and thoughts, and this is how it ends. Almost everyone of the authors examples ended up dying, some from suicide and others from accident. I believe that the author is trying to show that if you aren't prepared enough that you will end up either dying or barely alive. The author's own narrative adds to Alex's story because it's almost as you can assume that's the struggles that Alex had gone through in his first attempts to climb and go into the wild.

I think that Jon tells his along with other peoples story to show that Alex isn't alone with his ideas about living off nature and reuniting with it. He and Alex both go through the same things and have the same ideas while doing it. Giving up there perfect lives to challenge themselves and be what people were meant to be. Him telling his story kind of helps justify Alex's journey. It Shows people that Alex isn't alone in his thoughts.

The author is comparing himself to Alex to show that he can understand how Chris thinks and relate to him. Therefore he can fill in the parts nobody knows about and have a good understanding of how Chris was feeling when he was all alone in the wilderness. His narrative in the book comes as a little bit of a surprise and knowing that he lived through similar things himself makes me think of him as more of an outdoor adventurer as well and not just some old dude sitting in a chair all day writing on his newest book.

The author compared his stories to everyone else's stories because half of the people hate him because he is a pig and other people just think he is misunderstood. He is showing what could happen and how other people have fared and some people think Alex got what was coming to him because he was a ignorant and selfish pig. He is trying to show that it's not unique and we should pay more attention to it and maybe bring more awareness to the fact that other people have done.

Jon and Alex (as well as some of the others) had issues with male authority. This caused conflicts in their life, because of their haunting past relationships with their fathers. Their fathers always seemed to be disappointed, nothing that their sons did could ever satisfy them. These boys found something in nature that really intrigued them and it became part of their dreams. They didn't let their fathers tell them that their dreams were stupid and change their paths. They took the road less traveled, and lived lives that many of us wouldn't dare. They risked their lives in order to live their dreams. They were happy to at least go in a world that was their own, where they were happy.

The author is using his own story alongside Alex's to help show that Alex isn't alone or the only one who wants to stray off into nature. I feel the author is trying to relate to his characters through sharing his own story. Both the author and Alex were passionate about nature, fantasizing about adventuring and climbing, and had many problems with male authority. I think the author is using these common characteristics to show that he understands Alex's choices and feelings. His own narrative is adding the extra details and feelings that both of them were trying to either get away from or continue feeling while consumed in nature.

I think the author is trying to show how his journey is related to Alex and what happened to him. The author shows how Alex struggled with the environment. Maybe the other did as well to show readers a different way to look at the man's journey. I think he is trying to show different views and why Alex did what he did.
