For me personally, the most important rule for advancement is networking both within and outside of the organization.
We mainly work in big companies when one rarely has a chance to connect with all colleagues. Yet, inability to stay in touch with the closest teammates and at least a couple of departments that impact your daily work puts one in a bubble. It simply limits the opportunities one might leverage for future advancement and puts initiatives at risk due to lack of reconnaissance.

From my observations, if you do not know the unwritten rules, you may be perceived as a misfit in the workplace culture, especially when you are a newcomer and people already know that about you.

I think understanding the unwritten rules are very important else you are completely left out. Even though you may be excellent in your work yet not adapting or adhering to these unwritten rules will cause real damage to your professional growth. Visibility and networking are really important and thus understanding these rules to progress well become imperative

It a big embarrassment on our own part when we realize that we were not following the unwritten rule. It acts as a major hurdle in getting along team mates and colleagues. This is specially challenging for new comers.

I noted that building meaningful relationship; not just within your unit, department, or division, but across the entire spectrum of management is critical. This should be a major ingredient in consideration of everyone’s personal development plan. Without this vital element, one may be in the dark to opportunities that would hitherto have been easily accessible. Many have not figured this undisclosed but yet important component, and thus remain stagnated and frustrated.

Not knowing the unwritten rules in a work place , or more importantly not figuring them out soon enough, leaves you predisposed to rubbing people off the wrong way.Sometimes you might be able to recover from the impressions created , but more often than not they become career limiting, not only in your workplace, but within your industry.

The rule that I found most interesting is "Find ways to become visible"
We all think that being a hard worker is going to make us more visible within the organization but in my opinion, it makes us more invisible. Why? Because it is not impacting the organization in any way. Things are being done and that's were it ends. I being visible goes beyond work. I think being visible or increasing your visibility among the organization is based on how active you are within it. Sharing insights on meetings, bringing new ideas to the table and having conversations with upper management.

Understanding of the unwritten rules play a big part in one's career. Not working on your visibility is a big unsaid rule that can make or break your career. Nobody talks about it at the workplace(in my experience) but you have to do it. I think it makes sense as an employee is just a spec in the ocean and a number for the top leadership. and if one does not take steps or tries ways to become more than a number his career will become stagnant and will be more challenging rather than of a person who works on his visibility. On a day to day level a person might loose motivation, respect or might be ignored by his colleagues.

If someone does not know the unwritten rules then this can turn even a good workplace to a toxic one as it seems that you are not going anywhere and stuck at a particular position for the rest of your life. I think even after being visible enough to the company you have to take some steps which I have not figured out yet to show them your commitment and respect towards workplace and that you are ready for more responsibility.

Unwritten Rules are like intents which are not obvious, one needs to dig deeper to understand the dynamics. The rule "Network and build relationship within and outside the organization" could relate more closely.
In most of the organizations project assignment, becoming go to person and even the career moves are determined by this rule. Most of the projects or career advancement opportunities are assigned even before they are published. Your access to these opportunities is through these hidden informal networks.
Will not also undermine the importance of the outside or customer network to further propel you value in the organization. The concept is that this rule will creates the advocates / influencers for you in the organization.
