Dorothea Dix was a part of the prison reform movement. She visited prisons and she saw how prisoners were treated, and some of them weren't even prisoners. While some of them committed crimes and deserved to be in jail, others were simply mentally ill and were not receiving the help they needed, but none of them deserved to live in the conditions they did. Dorothea Dix realized this and made an effort to reform prisons for the better.
