When I was ninth Grade my science class went out in the field and tapped trees and eventually made maple syrup. It was a rich unit that involved environmental science; biology chemistry, math and a number of other studies since we sold it as a fundraiser: it was awesome!!,

When I was in 2nd and 3rd grade (a primary multi-age) we went to Seattle to watch the children's theater. We watched Cricket in Time Square which coordinated with the text we read in class. I don't remember much more beyond that, except that I always remember that book and really liking the play.

My history teacher took us outside and sat us on the ground in a circle and started to tell us the stories of historical people. He would never end the stories and ask us to go read the book if we wanted to learn more. This was his way to tell history. He said his Native American relatives used to tell stories in nature. I loved that experience of getting out of the classroom to hear a story.

My daughters all attend an expeditionary learning school. Last Spring my middle daughter's 5th grade class took a 1 week field trip to study rainforests in the highest place north west in the US. It was an amazing journey full of authentic learning.

if we are connecting to school-based learning, I don't remember any experiences as a student so will report from teacher perspective: the experiences my 6th graders had freezing during the winter unit seemed to help their understanding of heat transfer

I took a Biology class in high school and my teacher made us go outside and find stuff to put under microscope. One of the students brought back a spider and we had to look at it under the microscope. As I am allergic to all things "buggy" I was super traumatized. And I was forced to draw what I saw. To this day, Biology and I are mutually exclusive.

Once on a very long stopover in the Chicago airport i saw an in- airport exhibit of human bodies, preserved and 'sliced' in different ways. I have never been more fascinated in my life! I learned alot that day, which is interesting as i did pre-med and took human anatomy and have conducted and attended autopsies before!

In 10th grade we were learning about the Holocaust and World War 2 in Language Arts. In that same year I had the chance to visit the High School in Cambodia that the Khmer Rouge made there headquarters for the Killing Fields Genocide. Being able to be in a place where something similar to the Holocaust happened made everything we learned in class much more relevant.
