His laughter demonstrates how self-centered and passive he has become in comparison to John because of his different views to life. The people of the United States are slowly becoming self-centered and passive through the forms of entertainment that is easily accessible to them. Too many forms of entertainment for the people of the United States is causing everyone to eventually change and have the same reactions to new ideas/concepts. Lastly, the constant barrage of entertainment is making us self-absorbed and self-obsessed, leading to a society much similar to the World State.
