“‘It's curious,’ he went on after a little pause, ‘to read what people in the time of Our Ford used to write about scientific progress. They seemed to have imagined that it could be allowed to go on indefinitely, regardless of everything else. Knowledge was the highest good, truth the supreme value; all the rest was secondary and subordinate. True, ideas were beginning to change even then. Our Ford himself did a great deal to shift the emphasis from truth and beauty to comfort and happiness. Mass production demanded the shift. Universal happiness keeps the wheels steadily turning; truth and beauty can't. And, of course, whenever the masses seized political power, then it was happiness rather than truth and beauty that mattered. Still, in spite of everything, unrestricted scientific research was still permitted. People still went on talking about truth and beauty as though they were the sovereign goods.’” (Huxley 228).

Entertainment is making us passive and self-centered like the people of the World State through countless reasons, such as how expectations and social norms have changed drastically over time. Helmholtz finds Shakespeare's work hilarious as it does not make any sense to him because of his conditioning by the World State. “When Juliet said this, Helmholtz broke out in an explosion of uncontrollable guffawing. The mother and father (grotesque obscenity) forcing the daughter to have someone she didn't want! And the idiotic girl not saying that she was having someone else whom (for the moment, at any rate) she preferred . . . He laughed and laughed till the tears streamed down his face—quenchlessly laughed” (Huxley 184). His laughter demonstrates how self-centered and passive he has become in comparison to John because of his different views to life. The people of the United States are slowly becoming self-centered and passive through the forms of entertainment that is easily accessible to them. Too many forms of entertainment for the people of the United States is causing everyone to eventually change and have the same reactions to new ideas/concepts. Lastly, the constant barrage of entertainment is making us self-absorbed and self-obsessed, leading to a society much similar to the World State.

Our society is being controlled and conditioned by pleasure through many reasons. For example, the text stated, "The lift was crowded with men from the Alpha Changing Rooms, and Lenina's entry was greeted by many friendly nods and smiles. She was a popular girl and, at one time or another, had spent a night with almost all of them" (Huxley 57). This demonstrates how people are seeing sex as something regular and not as love and passion. By doing this, it represents that once someone is addicted to something, nothing else matters. Within our society, many people do things for others and not themselves to try and prove that they are superior than others.

There are countless sacrifices made for the sake of social stability through both the society in the World State and the United States, such as how the people of the World State are perpetually satisfied and happy. For example, John desperately attempts to show how the Delta's freedom and liberty but they are unable to understand him. “‘Don't you want to be free and men? Don't you even understand what manhood and freedom are?’ . . . ‘Very well then,’ he went on grimly. "I'll teach you; I'll make you be free whether you want to or not’ And pushing open a window that looked on to the inner court of the Hospital, he began to throw the little pill-boxes of soma tablets in handfuls out into the area” (Huxley 213). This demonstrates that having a purpose and meaning in life have been basically erased in society for the World State. The Delta's are unable to understand what John is trying to tell them since they are expected to behave and act a certain way. The United States is very similar to the World State from this because everyone has also been expected to follow set social norms and expectations. Lastly, the people of the United States are eventually going to be almost identical to the people of the World State because of how they have sacrificed uniqueness as everyone strives to become socially accepted and follow certain expectations.
