Il parle de l'amour et de la femme et fait partie du « Spleen et Idéal » des Fleurs du Mal. Il se déclare à une femme qu'il aime, mais celle-ci, le fait souffrir. Cette femme représente la fleur du mal ainsi inscrit dans le titre du recueil. La femme dont parle Baudelaire fait référence à une femme qu'il a rencontrée en 1842 lors de son voyage à destination de Calcuta, elle se nommait Jeanne Duval et était d'origine Maghrébine.
Dans cette oeuvre, sous la rubrique "Spleen et Idéal", la femme représente l'amour ce qui correspond donc à l'idéal, ensuite, le fait qu'elle soit malsaine représente le spleen. Jeanne était la femme idéale aux yeux de Baudelaire, mais il savait qu'elle n'était pas faite pour lui, avec tout le mal qu'elle lui procurait.
