Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games embodies the idea of self-reliance, she learns to adapt to the society she lives in right now, by being very independent, and by using her own strengths to win the game. "Great men have always done so and confided themselves childlike to the genius of their age." This quote is a really good example of Katniss, because she is a teenager, but she thought about her sister and did it for her.

Henry Rollins heart touching song, "Shine" implies the ideas that Emerson is talking about in his text. He promotes self- confidence by repeating, "If I listened to everything they said to me, I wouldn't be here" he is trying to emphasize that listening to others will bring you down, but if you do what you want and what you believe in, you will come out on top knowing you did it all on your own.

Emerson employs a logical appeal, by stating, "Self-reliance is it aversion." This shows that an individual has to want to be independent, or they will never be self-reliant. He also applies a pathological appeal towards the audience by giving his opinion and stating how he feels about himself. he states, "Pythagoras was misunderstood..." "To be great is to be misunderstood." These radiant quotes emphasize the passion Emerson has towards independence with ones self. The last appeal he includes in the text is ethos.Emerson believes that everyone should be given credit, as he states, "if you would be a man, speak what you think today in words as hard as cannon balls." This shows that self-reliance is a huge deal in a persons life, we have to speak our mind or we won't be heard at all.
