I am a first year grad student in ABA. I live in Southern California but am originally from Jacksonville, Fl. To say moving cross country was a culture shock would be an understatement. I thought I was culturally aware before, but Southern California has introduced me to so many different cultures that I had not personally interacted with before.
In doing research on articles for the class, I learned how many different countries immigrate here through the Mexico border. I had a limited understanding beforehand. I'm hoping over the course of this program that I gain a better understanding and will be able to put it to use to help others.

Unfortunately I was unable to attend the live speaker presentation due to my work schedule. After watching the video links though I found it interesting that there is/was an integration program to help refugees become acclimated to the German language and culture.

UNSDG#10

Before starting this class I had never heard of the UNSDG#10. After reading about it, reducing inequalities is something I am most passionate about. I was fortunate that even though I am the first person in my family to earn a college degree that my mother had a good support system so I never felt like I was lacking in any necessities. Economic inequality was something that I was aware of, it made me value and appreciate anything I had or earned. I didn't think much on social or racial inequalities until my friends adopted transracially out of foster care. Suddenly a whole new perspective was brought into my world. Now I worry every day about my godchildren being accosted or arrested for driving or walking while black. When I started working with individuals with developmental disabilities I became more aware of the lack of opportunities for them and how they are disregarded. Also, the incredible wage disparity there is for those who work in care. Working in care is often seen as low education work for women and people of color. It is not seen as the calling, which it is. It takes a lot of heart to work day in and day out with individuals that may bite, scratch, hit or throw feces at you, for only $9/hr. Non-profit agencies often cannot pay their employees a living wage because they don't receive enough money from government agencies to pay them one. This just highlights the social, economic inequalities among those with disabilities and people of color. Until we can get those in power to stop viewing those in care or working in care as less than, we will have to keep fighting against these inequalities.

Migrants from Low Resource Countries

I think countries with the lowest resources send lower shares of migrants due to the lack of economic ability and education in order to be able to leave their home countries. If you're having to cross oceans in hopes of a better life, you need to have the economic ability to get on that boat or plane and a place to go when you reach your destination. You have to be able to keep yourself alive.
