The Oneida Nation is originally from upstate New York but after the revolutionary war they began to relocate to Wisconsin. Sadly, in the course of the war, the Oneida lost around five million acres of their original land but in 1838 a treaty was made that gave them 64,500 acres of land along Duck Creek in Wisconsin. This is where the tribe has resided for the past 200 years.

The Oneida are a part of the League of the Iroquois, a confederacy consisting of the Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida and Mohawk. Traditionally, the Iroquois people were focused on agriculture settling in small villages of multifamily houses. Hunting, fishing, and gathering were also very common ways villages would get food. These villages were also known to be matrilineal, meaning descent was traced through the mother. Woman controlled everything from agriculture to elections and sometimes even war.

After the Oneida moved to Wisconsin, the federal government decided to open Wisconsin for settlement in 1834. The Oneida were asked to leave for land west of the Mississippi by the governor but they refused as they were already settled. In 1887 the Oneida had to give up their land due to the Dawes Act which stated that all Indian reservation lands be allotted to individual Indians who could sell their land after 25 years. After the 25 year period many non-Indians bought the land, leaving the tribe with a few hundred acres. This forced many families to leave for bigger cities such as Milwaukee and Green bay. In 1934 the allotment policy was reversed and two year later the Oneida were able to reunite after buying back over one thousand acres of land in northern Wisconsin.
