They were going to go to the dump to refill on their supplies, but before they could go to the store, a train appeared.Teddy, the main character in this chapter, jumped in front of the train, and wanted to play chicken with the train. But Gordie pulled him out of the way in the nick of time. However, after that, Teddy was angry with Gordie for pulling him away.

Chapter 9

This chapter is about the boys reaching the dump to refill their supplies. Then they decide about who goes to the store to buy some food by spinning coins. First, they get four tails which is a sign of bad luck. Then, all except Gordie get tails which meant that Vern, Teddy and Chris still had the bad luck and Gordie had to go to the store to buy food.

Chapter 10

This chapter is about the boys' encounter with Milo and Chopper. The main part in this chapter is when Milo insults Teddy's father by calling him a madman. That is when Teddy rages and starts to climb up the fence to where Milo was. His friends ultimately manage to stop him from climbing over by convincing him that Milo was trying to trap him by making him climb the fence. In the end, the boys managed to stop Milo from reporting them to the police by telling that they were witnesses to his insults about a war hero.

Chapter 11

This chapter is about how Teddy starts crying after some time because of the insults he heard about his father. Then Chris, who is supposed to be the best at making peace, consoled Teddy and made him feel better. After some time, Vern tells that going to see a dead body shouldn't be like a party and how he would get night-sweats if what he saw was scary. After listening to those words, everyone pondered over it.

This chapter is about Vern's and Gordie's close shave with death as they cross the bridge where they jump from the bridge to save themselves.

Chapter 13

This chapter is about Chris telling Gordie about the loser's life and about the milk money and how he tried to give it back but the teacher herself used it for herself to buy a new skirt. He also told Gordie about how he was treated unfairly just because of being a drunkard's son and the brother of Eyeball, who was a notorious local gangster, and Dave, who was in prison. This chapter shows about how wise Chris was and how he actually felt for Gordie to be able to advise him about his choices.

Chapter 14

This chapter is about the boys setting up camp in the forest and smoking cigarettes after supper while discussing about many different things. Ultimately, before they go to bed, Gordie tells them a Le Dio story; Le Dio being a soldier in the Second World War.
