Semiology is the study of signs and their meanings, and how they are portrayed through several examples of media.

Signifier: The physical aspect we see, this could be an object, a word or sounds, colours and image.

Signified: The meaning/interpretation each individual person comes up with when looking at a signifier.

Code: Signs work together in sets called codes, an example of a code is the alphabet as it is 26 separate letters working together to create signification. In other words codes are languages. 

Encode: Choosing the aspects (colour, sound etc) with specific meanings. 

Decode: Interpreting the chosen aspect in your own meaning.

Looking at them, I noticed multiple reoccurring themes that make up a formula for how these adverts are made. 

Most of them end with an image of the product in front of a blurred background. Looking at this, I realised it was a Shallow Depth-of-Field technique that was used to accomplish this and it allows the product to be focused on instead of the background which may take away the attention depending on how aesthetically pleasing it is. 

There is also usually a short, but catchy slogan which is next to the product to help sell it. For example, Skittles has the slogan, "Taste the Rainbow" which has become so memorable and iconic so much that people can identify the product without looking at it.

Lighting:
Soft Box - I would use 2 of these so that it lights up my object of focus and sharpens it up. Without it, the photographs I take will come out much darker
Natural Lighting - This would be used if I took photographs outside. the natural lighting is stronger than artificial lighting, and so I would have to take more precaution on where and how I am taking the photographs.

Camera Settings:
ISO = 200. This is so that the image taken doesn't come out too grainy.
Aperture = f/11. This so that the image come out in focus and much more sharp.
Shutter Speed = 200. The shutter speed is set to this level so that any moving images in the background will be clear and still and not blurred.

But originally I wanted to go with Aperture = f/11, but the pictures were coming out too bright and so I changed it to f/18. 
These photographs were all shot inside a studio, with soft-boxes on the side. I think they came out great, but next time IO should focus more on Depth-of-Field.

Using Adobe Photoshop, I edited #3 to look like a professional Pack Shot. This was the first time in ages I had used the program and so it was a good practice for the real thing. 

I used a tool to crop out the bottle and table and get rid of the background, which I replaced with a picture of people playing football. The reason why I chose people playing football is because the drink is named Lucozade Sport and so it would be fitting for it to be the background. The football background was quite clear, and so I used a lens blur effect to blur the picture and give it a Shallow Depth-of-Field effect where the main product is in focus and the background is faded away. 

A way I could improve upon this would be to further soften the edges of the bottle and table, as they stick out quite a bit. I would also blur the table itself, ever so slightly so that the bottle gets full focus.

The one I created was for ideas for adverts. I had a number of different factors that play into an advert including the product itself and celebrities to represent it and rolled a dice multiple times to form an equation of sorts which stringed together the factors to make one idea for a product.

The procedure was quite long, but after re doing it so many times I got the hang of it and starting remembering it much easily.  

Step 1: Choose a picture, it can consist of anything or anyone. 

Step 2: Create a new composition next to the picture, and make sure that you link them so that the new composition has the same measurements in width as the original picture. 

Step 3: Stay on the new composition. Find the factors of the width measurements and choose the middle or one of the middle numbers and draw a box from the edge in those measurements but in inches.

Step 4: Click on the gradient tool and make sure the colour is black and white. Draw a line across the box you just created and it will fill with the gradient, It also helps to hold shift to draw in a straight line. 

Step 5: You then hold down Ctrl-Alt-T to bring up the X and Y axis. Click on the triangle to reset the axis and on the X axis, you put in the original measurements from earlier.

Step 6: Once you do that, then hold Ctrl-Alt-Shift-T to duplicate the gradient filled bar up until in fills the whole page.

Step 7: Open up your chosen picture and apply the bars. The ribbed glass effect should overlap it and create a great effect to your chosen picture.

Below, you can see some of the attempts I did. Also note that it is better to also play around with the levels and saturation of the image to help give it a better look.

After showing Simon the presentation for the Snickers advert, he gave me some instructive criticism for anything I could improve on. He said that I was working at a high Merit at which I was able to get points across and explain the details of the advert. 

The criticism he gave me said that I did not use too many sophisticated words such as Semiotics. Simon also said that I talked too much about the factual side of the company whereas I should focus more on how the advert draws people in to be able to sell itself, such as how the advert uses its tone to appeal to the inner child of the man.

Overall I agree with Simon on these points as I know I could have done much better with the Presentation. I had all the points in my head, but I could not seem to find a way to present them properly. I know or sure that I will be able to do so much better the next time.

We talked about everything, from the meaning behind the names and the slogan, to why we made certain decisions, to Unique Selling Points, Demographics and Regulations. 
Howard and Simon both gave feedback on the Presentation as a whole and also gave some constructive criticisms such as the fact that we could have talked more about the Production side of what we did.
Another criticism was from within the Television Advert which was received well but they said that some of the sound was an issue, and more specifically the voices of the people. Though they were very clear, they didn't have any weight to them, as Howard and Simon said, it didn't have a cinematic weight of "epicness" which could match our whole theme. I agree with this, and it could be something we could change, and add some weight to the advert.
However a positive thing they said was that they loved the way it was shot, especially the opening shot of someone kicking a ball with the sunset behind them creating a silhouette. My opinion on that shot is the same, as I really love what we got there. We didn't plan to shoot during sunset, but we used it to our own advantage to create some incredible shots and I am grateful for that.

They gave us our primary flavour we needed to promote in the Adverts, and confirmed who our demographic was, young males from the ages 13 to 25. 
However, looking back, I have to say that the 4th question "What Aspects should be in our Advert?" seems quite unnecessary and doesn't add anything to our knowledge. After looking at the results and saw that people wanted to see mainly sports in our advert, but also that some people wanted comedy, Sam and I asked each other why don't we just put both in, and we realised we could have asked something better such as "How often do you buy Sports Drinks?"

So what we have found out is that the name of the product is going to be called Rush Energy. I personally love this name as it has a fitting name to the ideas of speed and energy, and the feeling you get. I also liked the name Dart, but our problem was that people would immediately link the name to actual Darts and wont see it fitting with running around and more athletic sports. 
We are set on now doing an advert in the style of a Film Trailer. This idea stuck out to us both and we now it will make the advert for Rush Energy very memorable, but also give it a broader future with opportunities and attention. The Film Trailer as a medium stands as a mostly dramatic based piece of media and it will allow us to do that in the advert, but in such a way that we can over do it and almost parody it.
And narrative and story wise we settled on Sam's idea of having it set around a group of friends playing football and having the drink and the trailer theme fit in with it, which I really liked the sound of a lot, as it felt quite natural and realistic in thought and could potentially be a great advert.

But  of course we couldn't have it too simple and have uniqueness to it. 
The idea to have a silhouette stuck to us and so almost instantly we sketched out someone running. We chose to do someone running as it doesn't specify to one particular sport, therefore ranging at many different sports.

After thinking long and hard about it, I decided to research into something I am a massive fan of, and that is Superhero films. I wanted to look into if Superhero films, mainly films made by Marvel Studios, have sub-genres to their films, and if that can be the key to stopping Superhero films from giving audiences fatigue. The reason why I went with this, is because my short film is about Art, and how it can have so many meanings and forms to it. That is the same with these Superhero films, as they are one title like art, and can have so many different forms to them too.

For the cover, I wanted to link the cover to my research through both aesthetics and metaphorically. The image has someone wearing a jumper with the Captain America symbol on it, whilst yanking open their jacket to reveal it as a homage to Superman (1978). The metaphorical meaning comes with the whole notion I'm working towards which is about Superhero films being one form, having multiple different forms within it. The jacket in the image is supposed to be representing the Superhero films as a whole, and the jumper represents the multi genre that lays hidden underneath, the jacket opening as it shows my research into finding these sub-genres. 
For the article layout, I looked at Empire Magazine articles for past Superhero films, and took inspiration for one done for Guardians of The Galaxy (2014), which is coincidentally one of the films I am analyzing.
