A strength in my opinion of using the electoral college system is that it seems to me that it tends to represent more of the diversity of the country. In other words, if the President were to be elected only using popular votes it would be focusing on big populated cities, leaving out rural areas. A drawback I see with our current system is mainly focusing on the non-voters. Many individuals who can actually vote do not vote due to a lack of trust in the system, or the mindset that their vote doesn't actually at the end of the day. I myself for a time had a similar mindset that my count didn't actually count but then I realized that I was mistaken. I just had to self educate myself better with how the electoral presidential process works and that's another thing that many individuals don't truly know or understand the process. I feel that a new method should be instilled whether it's offering people an incentive to actually vote when polls open for example offering a discount to a specific store or something around those lines. I'll be honest and say that I am not affiliated with either party because I am more of an independent, free-thinker. I hope that in the future, the independent party really becomes a prominent figure in our government because we are really over-due for a change in course. Another thing that I dislike about our election is that we the people technically have no power in choosing a president. Think about it, the video even said that citizens do not directly vote for a new president; we are voting for the delegates to choose. One strength about our election process is that as long as you are citizen and over the age of 18, you have the right to vote. it could use some work. It seems as though it would be pretty easy, but there is a lot that comes into place. When voting, we are essentially picking delegates which then pick the candidates.
One of the strengths is that is seems to be organized due to not everyone having to vote all at once and everyone being overwhelmed. A weakness that I think everyone can agree on is that there is a lot of distrust in our system, which creates a lot of issues.
If I could create a new method of voting in the United States it would be to be more diverse. When there are limited things to pick from it is hard to when both leaders could have good qualities, but that does not necessarily mean that they are trusted to lead us. I think one of the greatest aspects of the process is the citizens of the United States ability to vote for whichever candidate they want, however, this is also a drawback in the end. The people of one state can vote for a democratic party, but if they are beaten 49% to 51%, the state's electors vote for the candidate who won more than half. By the optics of this process, it can seem like the individual voter does not matter because as long as they are outnumbered, their vote was basically disregarded. This is where I feel one of the greatest drawbacks is. On top of that, the swing states are really the deciding factors in an election and I do not really think that is fair. Though it would be very difficult to count, I feel the best way to conduct a presidential election would be tallying the votes of the citizens. I think that not only would this enhance the importance of the individual voter, but it would also allow the process to be more easily understood. It seems confusing and somewhat unnecessary to have people vote for delegates to then vote for the primaries of the president before the actual president is chosen by electors who are still done by electors, which to be restated, seems unnecessary. The drawbacks that stem (from my point of view) is the fact that the votes aren’t really done by the voters, but by delegates and electors, and for electors for those who vote for one side if another outweighs both are added, to the winning side. The strength that can be stated is that it allows a more structured system in a sense, that allows most to be gratified on the process (those in the knowhow). The new method of voting would be somewhat simplistic, as those who place their votes for the primaries and the actual election process get their votes added, and not through “third-parties” per-say. The way that the president is chosen is a very good one but as with anything there could be changes that can be made. From the very beginning, I thought my vote for the elections meant nothing and after watching this video it just makes my thoughts not budget one bit. For the first part of the election process, the people's votes don't matter because the delegates make the choice about who the presidential candidates are. When living in a democracy one of the joys is that we have the chance to pick who gets to run our country, but during the first part of the presidential election the people don't have a chance to pick those candidates then that's a red flag. But I'm being a little dramatic with that last part, but the more time goes on the more than any form of media starts to influence the government's choices. Honestly, you can take that to be a good or a bad aspect, but when you start bringing the media into something you know there's going to be biased. When that starts to influence the elections more than it's going to make some of the people not want to vote. Anyway, one strength I can think of is that during these elections a lot of people can come together and try to choose who our next leader is going to be. But a drawback is this system makes our votes seem like just a number, in fact, it makes it feel like our votes mean nothing. My reasoning is like I said before the people that make the first choices are the delegators, which in my opinion shows that the people don't have the first say which shouldn't be the case. The delegators are most likely going to choose which candidate will get them more to talk about, rather than the candidate who could help the country. There is a lot more than I initially thought. The electron process seems tedious. There are many moving pieces that can manipulate the outcome. Most people traditionally vote for the representative of the political party to which they belong, and each state has electoral votes that influence the final decision in the elections. In my opinion, this is a disadvantage since many of the voters decide not to vote due to the limited electoral force they have to decide in the final election. A positive point of the traditional way is that many registered voters vote for the candidate of their political party, which generates less political costs to campaign and wins territories dominated by the opposite party. Personally, I would not change the voting method because I believe that this method is created for a state system. The strengths of the process could be how organized it is. This helped in gaining a better understanding of it all. However, the biggest weakness that comes to mind for me is the fact that most people are under the impression that their voice matters in the long run, but that isn't entirely the case. Our voices mostly matter only initially when deciding which way a state will go. Also, the idea of swing states seems to put a bit of an imbalance in the voting. Individual states should not have that much power in who runs the entire country. As much of a pipe dream as it may be, an ideal election process would count everyone's votes evenly and find a true winning candidate this way. I think we need a consistent way to vote. I was definitely in shock at first with the fact that it took three days to count all the votes. Like why that long? I feel like they should try a method such as approval voting.
