I’m excited to join this community and share my passion for learning how we can all learn from each other—no matter who we are—to make our planet more sustainable. My work revolves around land use policy, so I’m particularly interested in how we can shape policies that reflect our shared humanity, rather than just seeing them as tools for control. After all, policies are made by us and for us, right?

And just for fun, if I could have dinner with anyone, it would definitely be SpongeBob. No deep reason—I just love his endless enthusiasm for work and his hilarious way of dealing with, well, challenging people (or in his case, sea creatures!).

My academic and professional journey has led me through a fascinating intersection of architecture, urbanism, environmental planning, and political ecology. What captivates me most is the seamless merging of aesthetic beauty with functionality—a harmony where form not only serves purpose but also inspires. Cartography, in particular, holds a special place in my heart, as it allows me to visually narrate the stories of spaces, communities, and ecosystems. Over the years, I’ve immersed myself in this field through study, collaborative work with communities, and engagement with policymakers. My work involves researching, designing, and creating within these realms, always striving to craft spaces and systems that are not only sustainable and equitable but also deeply meaningful and visually compelling.

If I could invite someone to a care-full dinner party, it would either be my grandmother or goodmother. Their wisdom, warmth, and unconditional love have shaped who I am today, and sharing a meal with them would be a cherished moment of connection and gratitude.

Although the research is about North Sea Region, my research team have close relation to Wadden Islands as well.

For the dinner party, I would like to invite indigenous people on each of the five Wadden islands, but of course, if I can understand what they were talking about. I am very curious about their Wadden common identity and own island identity, although this already goes beyond my research.

I’m currently in the fourth year of my PhD trajectory — such a critical and exciting period! As part of my double-degree program, I spent two years at the University of Groningen and am now continuing my research at the Bandung Institute of Technology. I’m passionate about studying collaboration, institutional networks, and multi-level governance in the context of transport infrastructure development.

Since I really enjoy connecting and working with others, I’m excited to join this community. I miss Groningen a lot — if I could have dinner with anyone right now, it would definitely be my friends there. I’d love to share my “experimental” Dutch dishes and, of course, some delicious Indonesian food!

Hi! I'm Medina, a fourth-year PhD student. I am pursuing a double degree PhD and completed the first two years of my studies in the Netherlands. I am currently finishing my PhD journey in Indonesia. My research focuses on digitalisation and rural entrepreneurship, specifically exploring how offline dynamics influence the engagement of rural communities with, and their adoption of digital technologies.

Besides that, I’m a huge Harry Potter fan! During the challenging stages of my PhD, I often wished I could continue my studies at Hogwarts. Maybe magic could help me handle all the rejections and endless revisions.

I would definitely invite my late dad to a dinner party. I would love to share my "roller-coaster" journey throughout my PhD with him. We always dreamed of me pursuing my PhD, specifically in Groningen, but he passed away before I started my studies. He was always a great support for me. Although he's not here, I can still feel the warmth of his love. 🤍

I am interested in the relationships between tourism, culture, political economy and urban change, with broader interest in governance, creativity and communities in times of transition. In my PhD project I particularly study the impacts of post-disaster redevelopment on tourism dependent urban spaces.

Thinking about who to invite was harder than I expected haha! But I would say I feel lucky that I can think of so many people I associate with care in my past and present! But for the sake of the party, I'd invite Ziad El Rahbani, a famous Lebanese composer, pianist, playwright and political commentator. He passed away recently. He was an absolute blast!

I'm in my third year (already!) of my PhD. My research is about urban design governance. I'm curious about how do the urban design initiatives magically happen, how they evolve, and why they finally succeed or fail. Each case study brings a new insight into how the design thinking intertwines with governance logic, and how do they communicate, reconcile, or conflict with each other.

For the dinner, I'd love to invite Harry Potter because I'm so curious about life in Hogwarts!

Hi everyone, I’m Yuankun. I’m doing my PhD in urban planning and human geography. I look at how older adults experience everyday spaces — especially green spaces — and how these spaces affect their sense of well-being.

I’m really interested in how space shapes daily life. How do places influence how we feel, how we relate to each other, and how societies organize themselves? Those kinds of questions keep me curious.

For the dinner question, I would invite Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of China. Not because of power or politics, but because he reshaped space in such a fundamental way — through roads, shared systems, and large-scale organization.

I would honestly love to show him what the world looks like today. Cities connected globally, people moving across borders, digital spaces everywhere. I’d ask him whether this is what “unity” might look like in a different era — and whether we are actually living better lives than people did in his time.
