Bedtime Oral Stories

One of my earliest memories includes my mother telling me stories in Spanish about her life in Mexico. She would tell me real stories that happened to her as a child, but would also tell me famous Mexican tales such as La Llorona. I loved listening to these because I knew many of these stories were real!

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

In pre-k, one of the books that I remember being really invested in was this book. I thought it was so cool that a caterpillar could turn into a butterfly. I remember asking my teacher to read this book again to the class, since we did not know how to read yet.

Interactive Books

Early in my education, I thought books were all about words and pictures, until I discovered my favorite book ever at the time. This book was titled "There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly", illustrated by Pam Adams. This was the first interactive book I had seen. I remember always going to get this book and sitting on the bean-bag chair during free time because I was able to open it and see what the lady had in her stomach!

5 Little Monkeys

In kindergarten and first grade, I remember always loving the 5 little monkey song! My teacher would make us sing this as we walked to the lunchroom to make sure we were all following her and not chit-chatting. I think it was a smart way to have us all in line.

Esperanza Rising

I never really liked reading because I struggled to do so. Since my parents only spoke Spanish, I didn't really have any practice with reading in English. In 5th grade, I read Esperanza Rising, and it was the first real book that I read and truly understood. I remember finally being able to understand it and feel a book. I was able to imagine what it was like to live her life.

RL Stine Books

A series of books that I absolutely enjoyed reading was "Fear Street", specifically the book "Switched". I was so into this book that I finished it within a week. This was when I discovered that I liked thriller/horror books.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid

In middle school, "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" was trending. Everyone would fight over these books. They were so easy to read but so long. I only read about 3 books, but Hard Luck was my favorite.

Uglies and Pretties

I discovered dystopian societies in 7th grade. I read the book "Uglies" and was so into it. As soon as I finished it, I read the book "Pretties", which was the sequel. I thank my seventh grade teacher for letting me borrow her personal books, since the school library did not have them.

I was in a very low reading level in 7th grade, which is why my teacher put me in a group that was assigned this book. Although we were forced to read it, I ended up falling in love with it. It was one of my favorites!

Of Mice and Men

This was an assigned book in 9th grade. Honestly, I only read parts of it because our teacher would play us movie scenes as we went. I found this book so sad and cried when I read the end.

Greek Gods

In 10th grade, my class read a famous greek play which was very hard to read. I quickly learned that this genre was not for me. The complicated vocabulary made it hard to understand. I still enjoyed learning about Greek Gods though.

Spanish Literature

In highschool, I took AP Spanish Literature. One of the readings that I remember enjoying was the one written by Sor Juana Ines. She wrote "Hombres Necios que Acusais" and I felt some sort of connection with it.

Don Quixote

In the same AP Spanish class, I read the famous Don Quixote, written by Miguel de Cervantes. I enjoyed the way Don Quixote was able to view the world differently and unlike anyone else. Although it was hard to read, the message was pretty cool.

Snow Falling

I began watching a Netflix show called “Jane the Virgin” when I was in 8th grade, but new episodes kept airing until I was in highschool. A book that came from this show was Snow falling. I quickly purchased it and would read it every night to my best friend, because we both loved that show.

Milk and Honey

This book was trending in high school. I struggled a lot with my weight and always felt insecure. I read this book and it really helped me see things differently. Although poetry wasn’t my favorite genre, I learned to like it and make sense of it.

Forensic Anthropology

I don’t really read anymore because I personally never liked it and I find it hard to find time for it. Despite this, I found myself really intrigued by forensic anthropology. I took this class my freshman year of college and would read the textbook a lot because I had a lot of interest in this topic. Sometimes I still debate if I want to major in this instead.
