2) The fact that Stradlater is able to shave his face using a razor that is full of his hairs from the past and use a rusty razor that is extremely unhygienic shows how he is a slob, but that Stradlater can only get himself to look good enough so that others find him presentable. He is enamored by himself, but not enough to actually clean what makes him look that way. On a deeper level Stradlater’s hygiene states that he is superficial and does not truly care about his belongings, but rather just on how he looks. 
3) This shows how picky Holden is with how he keeps clean and what he does regarding hygiene, showing that even though Holden does not necessarily like cleaning, he still sees it as essential and necessary in order to be humane essentially. However, more than that it speaks about how Holden cares about how he looks, and how he presents himself, and the means to get there in contrast to how Stradlater doesn't care about the means, but rather the final result.

2) This reveals how Jane cares for how she looks, but also cares about the art and the practice of how to get there. She understands that without hard work, she cannot attain what she wants, but that she also needs to take time for herself to do what makes her happy. Even though she is slightly superficial, in the fact that she cares about how it will make her thighs look, she is really just conforming to societal norms, and the life of a dancer. It also expresses how she is picky in how she does things, with a daily routine that she keeps up with and how she keeps all of her checkers in the back row.
3) This shows how Holden is observant, and cares about who he surrounds himself with. He just wants someone to play with him and to help him through the tough parts of life, someone to be there for him like Allie was. It also proves his enthusiasm for her and to know that an old friend is back in town. More than that though, it expresses how Holden is quite lonely and yearns for the friendship that he had in the past.

2) This shows how Allie loved literature and appreciated the small things about it. He enjoyed reading and enjoyed life, rather than being the person that is angry about everything, he chose to enjoy his life even though he knew he had Leukemia, and was going to die soon. He was not only intelligent by kind and sweet, his story lives on with Holden. Despite being younger than Holden, Allie knew what he wanted and was able to find that with everything he did such as writing in his mit. Allie was his own person and did what he wanted for joy, but also left an imprint in Holden's life. 
3) This is important in Holden's life because Allie was his best friend, and his brother. A death like that is devastating and heartbreaking, it hurts, and the fact that Holden is so vastly different than his brother, but that he still looks up to him in ways that are indescribable. Holden wants to continue Allie's story, but it hurts too much for him, and he has not let go of Allie quite yet, he still feels all the emotions that he felt directly after his death.

You could tell, for one thing, that they never went anywhere swanky for lunch. It mad me so damn sad when I thought about it, their never going anywhere swanky for lunch or anything. I knew it wasn’t too important, but it made me sad anyway.”
2) The nuns live a pretty simple life, and don't need much to survive except for the gratitude of others, and as nuns, their job is to remain pure and help keep in touch with god. They helped Holden through his situation and gave him company even for a little bit, which was important to him and kept him distracted from wanting to take his own life.
3) This quote shows how Holden had a low tolerance for phony's or fakes, and he realized that the nuns were about as real as it got. He liked them and enjoyed their company through everything. It is also kind of interesting because Holden felt bad for them because he liked cool places, he liked enjoying life and enjoying the way that life took him, the only thing that he did not like was worrying about money and the worries that money brings. Which is why this quote is important, it shows how Holden does not care about the money, but rather cares about how hard it is to get any, and the nuns have a hard time getting money to go to cool places to eat.

2) This shows how Sally is also as foolish and childish as Holden, enough to say that they love each other after only being with each other for a few minutes. After the play, Sally suggests that they go ice-skating, but this outing only turns into an argument when Holden tries to explain his cynical worldview to her. 
3) This shows that Holden craves affection and attention from anyone he can get it from. He misses that feeling of love and does not truly know what it feels like because he hasn't been told it in a long time, he has not been shown that feeling of attention in a while. He tries to get it through different means and even tries to get it from a hooker, but is unable to. It also shows how Holden is unable to really understand his feelings because all he feels is sadness most of the time, and he is unable to feel the way that he wants. Unlike him, Sally thinks that people should follow rules in life, an idea that so thoroughly upsets Holden that he calls her a “royal pain in the ass” before leaving. Which, then he leaves without even feeling remorse and this also shows a lack of affection because he does not know how to comfort someone.

2) This shows how Phoebe understands Holden and tries to be there for him as much as possible, but it's hard for her to do that because she is simply a kid, and he goes to school so far away. It is hard for her to be a kid because she's lost one brother and she has to help her other brother feel whole again, but she still finds ways to be a child by roller skating and having fun with her friends.
3) It represents how Holden gets his affection and feels loved, he feels the warmth and the only love that his family gives him. She is the only one that understands him other than Allie, but now that he's gone, Phoebe is like his anchor in this world. This quote represents the first time Holden speaks about his younger sister at length, and it appears in Chapter 10. Holden’s words show how much he cares about Phoebe, and in a rare instance of positivity he sings her praises for another couple of pages. Holden loves Phoebe because he can easily connect with her. Not only is she a good listener, but she also has a keen sense of discernment. These characteristics make Holden feel like they are on the same page. For instance, they share an understanding of what makes a movie “lousy” or “pretty good.”
