Mofidul is also an author and social activist of repute. He has written more than a dozen
books on socio-cultural study and history. He has been awarded with the Bangla Academy
Literary Prize and the "Ekushey Padak" National Award. He directs the Oral History
Project of the museum which has accumulated more than 60,000 eye-witness accounts of
history. The project also has a Peace Education component. He is involved in promoting
justice for genocide victims and the concept of peace and tolerance in society.

What is the background/context of your site? The importance of Our Lord in the Attic Museum as a place to promote freedom of faith and religious belief (FoRB)?

  • Historic House located in the oldest part of Amsterdam. A few meters away from the first church of Amsterdam. On the inside of the house, there is a hidden Roman-Catholic church which is not visible from the outside. It was built in the XVI century when Catholics were not allowed to practise their faith. It is one of the 20 hidden churches in Amsterdam (XVII-XVIII centuries)

  • This happened under the freedom of X law, in which Christianity was tolerated but not accepted. 

  • If people tolerate each other, they don't respect and accept each other. What does tolerance mean? 

How do you use your site to promote freedom of faith or religious belief outside of this context? How do you connect to contemporary FoRB discriminations?

  • In Dutch society, the majority of children go to secular schools. These children have little understanding of other peers religions (Hindu, Islam, catholic...) and although everyone in Amsterdam frames the city as a very tolerant one, that is not always the case because of lack of knowledge and understanding amongst others.

  • Project: Voices of Tolerance. The program focuses on people's own experiences of freedom and tolerance. Young people speak out about themselves and each other. The starting point is always a visit to the hidden church in the old house. 

What concrete, specific actions/activities/programs do you organize to promote freedom of Faith and religious belief? What is your audience? Your strategy? 

  • The museum invites people from rural and urban politics to get informed about the museum projects. They are also invited to talk to young people and learn about their interests and concerns

  • A Jew, a Christian and a Muslin, Exhibition by Eran Shakine

  • Joining the Amsterdam Vocacional Institute and the Fashion Academy of Amsterdam, creating internship opportunities for young people.

History of Bangladesh: 
  • In 1947, the colonial policy of divide and rule in India divided the country between Indian people and Muslims, creating in Pakistan a state with two wings separated by 1000 miles. 
  • Religion was used by the Pakistani authorities as a tool for oppression. In the name of common Muslim nationhood, the Pakistani authorities denied the rest of the identities and beliefs and the linguistic and national identity of the Bengali population.
  • Bengali population was dominated culturally, politically and economically.
  • This was challenged by the secular Bengali state in 1971. The Nation became the victim of Genocide Brutality.
  • 1971 struggle was a negation of the 1947 partition religious line. In the core of Bangladesh nationhood, we can find the desire for an inclusive national identity
  • Post-independence Banglades: New Constitution Upholds Bengali National Identity, Secularism, Democracy and Social Equity. 

The Role of Liberation War Museum:
  • To bring history to new generations by upholding the core values of the struggle
  • To promote secular and liberal values of the struggle

  • Mobile Museum and Oral History Program. The bus travels to different schools in the country and encourages students to collect testimonies from their families. More than 60,000 testimonies collected

Explain the rationale/background of the project Musawat: Engaging Youth from Iraq, Palestine and Lebanon on Freedom of religion and Belief

  • The rights of some religious groups are not recognized in the Iraq constitution. For example, the name of some groups is not even mentioned in the text. Therefore, the right to FoRB is not always guaranteed by law. Constant violations against FoRB are tracked by the organization in different countries.


What are the main objectives of the project and the specific activities conducted as part of it to combat violation of FoRB
  • Contribute increasing social cohesion and equality in Iraq, Lebanon and Palestine
  • Increase freedom of belief and religion, making sure all ethnic and religious groups can freely practice their beliefs
  • Increase public awareness about other religious groups
  • Counter bender based and sectarian discrimination
Four pillars of discrimination: Social level, political /authoritarian level, online discrimination, policy discrimination. 

How do you engage the youth and how do you work regionally?

  • Hermine: In the Netherlands, we receive a lot of support from religious leaders and the government. Religious diversity is a very important topic in the Netherlands.
  • Mofidul: when we started our work, the interpretations of history were divided. We decided to not impose any narrative. That worked really well for us. We receive support from religious and local authorities. 
  • Sangar: we are getting more support from religious leaders from minority groups, mostly because we are working with them on supporting their rights. They are more open to us when we need their support. Muslim religious leaders are divided. Some of them are restricted and radicalized, having only one interpretation of history. Some of them are really open and participate in our activities.  


Silvia to Sangar: I would be interest in knowing a but more about how you conduct inter-faith dialogues

  • We invite religious leaders and members of various religious groups. Most of the time we choose a specific subject and all participants express their opinions and recommendations. The organization transforms this content into reports or social media posts that help increase awareness.
