The Adelaide Dairy Company (ADC) is an Australian milk-processing company. Recently, a retailer in Singapore placed orders for 60,000 3-kilogram tins of milk powder to be delivered progressively over 6 months.

There are 3 options, namely option A, option B, option C to discuss. Many considerations, such as total costs of delivering the milk powder, products’ physical characteristics,… must be taken into account when the packaging and materials handling decision is made.

Below are a brief summary of each option’s characteristics:
Option A:

Package the milk powder in tins ($3/kilogram) (3.3 kilograms/ tin)

Palletize ($25/ pallet) these tins ($3/ tin) and shrink-wrap to withstand a sea journey

These tins are loaded into temperature-controlled shipping containers ($500/ containter)

The loaded containers would be trucked from the processing plant to the port of adelaide

Ship from port of adelaide to any address in singapore (ocean freight: $2,500/ container)

Option B:

Package the milk powder in a new design tins ($3/kilogram) (3kg/ tin)

Palletize ($25/ pallet) these tins ($3.1/ tin) and shrink-wrap to withstand a sea journey

These tins are loaded into temperature-controlled shipping containers ($500/ containter)

The loaded containers would be trucked from the processing plant to the Port of Adelaide

Ship from Port of Adelaide to any address in Singapore (ocean freight: $2,500/ container)

Option C:

shipping milk powder in bulk (using unpalletized stackable drums loaded into shipping containers) from Adelaide to Singapore. These drums are reusable. ($100/ drum, could be resold for $80)

A qualified contractor could then be hired in Singapore to repackage the milk powder into 3-kilogram tins ($2/ tin) identical to the ones in Option A.

deliver the milk powder locally to the retailer’s warehouse. ($0.50/ kilogram to repackage and deliver)

We will choose option B which is ADC’s supplier proposed a new tin
design, so that pallet density could be increased. According to the calculations above, option B can load 5280 tins of milk powder per container, which is more than option A & C can load. Option B has the total costs of delivering the milk powder to the retailer of $796835, whereas option A has the total costs of $799260 and total cost of Option C is $817905. It means option C can load more drums of milk powder per container

for less total costs.
