         <description><![CDATA[<div>While these prodigious structures were the center of attention, a new and more significant technology was developing: the steel-framed high-rise building. It began in Chicago, a city whose central business district was growing rapidly. The pressure of land values in the early 1880s led owners to demand taller buildings. The architect-engineer William Le Baron Jenney responded to this challenge with the 10-story Home Insurance Company Building (1885), which had a nearly completely all-metal structure.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Perhaps the greatest engineering feat of its time, the Brooklyn Bridge was unlike anything that Americans had ever seen before. At 3,455 feet, the Brooklyn Bridge was the longest suspension bridge in existence when it was completed in 1883. Its two towers rise 275 feet above the East River, making them substantially taller than any building in New York's skyline when they were built. The bridge's cable supported 6,620 tons, and the whole structure weighed more than twice that. The engineers who built the Brooklyn Bridge made several innovations as they went, overcoming the many challenges inherent in so sizable a project to create a bridge that has often been referred to as the eighth wonder of the world.<br><br></div>]]></description>
