What I knew about sculpture

I wasn't knowledgable about sculptures back then and I only knew limited facts about it. I knew that sculpture developed through different time periods but I never knew that it was that specific as it was taught in class. I also knew that there were different materials and techniques used. I know that there should be elements to follow but I was not familiar with them. Lastly, I also knew that Greek sculpture was the foundation of a lot of country's sculpture for they were able to see how beautiful and harmonious the sculptures were.

What I learned about sculpture

Sculpture is a form of fine arts with its final purpose of having beauty. Sculpture has many principles and elements. Under principles there are orientation, proportion, scale, articulation, and balance.

Orientation is the dimensional plan of the sculpture. We can see this in the contrapossto (where a figure puts their weight on one foot) of Michelangelo's David, the principle of axiality of Bernini's David and a lot more.

Proportion is the relation of one part to another figure. A perfect example can be seen in the Canon of the Polykleitos.

Scale is size of the sculpture in relation to its surroundings.

Articulation is how different parts of the body blend into a single model/form.

Balance is the symmetry and the stability of the structure.

Under elements there are many things to take consideration of such as lines, color, texture, space, value, and shape. However, there are two main integral elements that are evidently seen in a sculpture which are mass and space.
Mass refers to the sculpture's largeness whereas space is the air surrounding the sculpture.

I have also learned that there are 4 different sculptures which are classical, renaissance, baroque and modern.

Greek classical sculpture have went through Archaic, Classical, and Hellenistic. Archaic style is very simplified and rigid as we can see from the Kourus and Kore. Classical style introduced an ideal proportion and realistic carved muscles as we cam see from Polykleitus' spear-bearer. Lastly, for Hellenistic, the sculptures are very dramatic and had a theatre representation as we can see from the Dying Gaul. For the Romans, they took inspiration on making their sculptures from the Greeks and they also integrated their own style by carving real life people instead of Gods as shown by the Greeks.

Renaissance was a period known for making sculptures for public art and for wealthy patrons for their home. Public sculpture became an important aspect in this period. An example is the Pieta by Michelangelo, it was showcased in St. Peter’s Basilica.

Baroque sculptures’ aim was to show extravagant movement of human figures and these sculptures are meant to be seen from all angles. An example of this is the Ecstasy of St. Theresa by Bernini. Looking closely at St. Theresa we can see her face is full of pain and that the draperies are thicker then that angel.

Last is modern sculpture. Modern sculpture presents abstraction. It favours light distortion and is completely against realism. We can see examples of these modern sculptures in Naguchi's Waterstone and Baldermor's Birds

While learning about the time periods and the elements of structure is integral, I would also like to know more about the making of an actual sculpture. I'd like to know about the processes and the tools sculptors use. I'd like to know more about the material used and when to use them or on what occasion to use them. I feel that learning these things will widen my knowledge and will help me gain experience.
